All those trouble just by changing the CPU that's meant to be a drop in upgrade.

The thing confuses me is that if those USB devices used to work perfectly fine before the CPU upgrade, then why changing the CPU causes all the instability?

Ninja post from sandys. I guess related question is what AGESA version is your BIOS at? Could older chipset not receive latest AGESA fixes?

Do you have the amd64-microcode package installed?

Oh, for... I was sure, *sure* that I was on the latest BIOS. It was the one that introduced 5000-series support, after all!

Turns out, no. I'm four chuffin' years behind the latest BIOS. That'd do it!

Flashing now. Cheers for the pointers, all!

    EDIT:
Release changelogs are full of "improve system performance and stability," "improve system stability," "improve system compatibility"...

Plugged the hub back into the chipset USB ports, as a test. Writing this on it, and... it's not losing any letters this time. Looking promising!

    EDIT:
Rebooted to tweak the fan curve again, and noticed that those IRQ errors have gone from the boot log. Nice!

Much of what used to be motherboard chipset is now on the Ryzen IO die, it's not just a CPU switch, it is almost a platform switch and why some x370 could do PCI gen 4 etc even though they were not supposed to, so it is not as straight forward as it seems, AMD have just done a decent job to make it seem that way with their complex AGESA.

Speaking of which, loads of vulns that have been patched out last year, I should update my BIOSes, not done it in years....

He was never seen again. Bricked the motherboard? Died in a fire? Who knows. He's been returned to the universe, RMA process initiated.

you now need to make yourself a days since last crash counter for your office with the no doubt countless bits of small machines you have lying about, perhaps it can be an MFD with your meshtastic node :D

Fun fact, you can one-liner that with one pipe and a fork:

    Code:
    blacklaw@shodan:/media/RAM Disk$ echo It has been $(uptime -p | cut -d' ' -f2-) since the last crash.
It has been 3 hours, 18 minutes since the last crash.

USB still ain't happy: woke the system up with the keyboard fine, but then everything hanging off the hub (including keyboard and mouse) was dead as a doornail. Whipped the cable out of the back, moved it from chipset USB to CPU USB - I'm typing on it now, happy as Larry. Log's filled with repeated cannot reset, cannot enable, hub_ext_port_status failed errors.

At some point I need to upgrade the OS, 'cos even with HWE I'm still on a kernel that's older than the CPU. Could help!

No actual crashes today. Too early to celebrate, though, it's only been 34 hours or so.

I'm sure if you ran a proper OS like windows the USB would be fine :p :D

Don't want to jinx it but reckon you'll be sorted now, fingers crossed no new bugs come with a kernel update.

What about the USB stuff? All fixed? Is the ram at 3600?

Didn't have any USB problems this morning, but I don't have anything in the rear chipset USB ports either. (Though I do have something in a front chipset USB 2.0 port, which seems fine.)

And aye, I bumped the RAM back to 3600MHz when I was setting the fan curves back up. Happy days!

Another delay to the USB peripherals working on wakeup this morning, but I can live with that.

Going to shut the thing down so I can swap the 92mm fan in the Wraith Thingy with a 120mm on a 3D-printed adapter. Hopefully. It's... very tight to the back of the graphics card...

20.04 and kernel 5.15…? Oof… My dude, we’re on Ubuntu 25.04 now, five LTS releases ahead of you, and… er… “many”… kernel “versions”* ahead.

It is, most emphatically, definitely time for an OS upgrade! :hehe:

You’ll need to do it very soon indeed, whether you want to or not. Unless you have Ubuntu Pro, 20.04 will no longer be supported after May.

*Far as I can tell, Torvalds sets the kernel version numbers based on vibes, rather than using any kind of meaningful semantic versioning system like major.minor.patch. But, to be frank, no one else in the world is really in a position to argue with the guy that quite literally created the Linux kernel, so I guess he can do whatever the hell he thinks works best… We’re all still gonna use Linux and we’re all still gonna use Git…

Ubuntu 25.04 is not an LTS release; it's only supported for nine months. I'd be going to either 22.04 or 24.04, the previous and current LTS releases respectively. They only come out every two years, not every year (so I'm two versions behind, not five.)
I have Ubuntu Pro, and have enabled ESM.

    In hardware news: ta-da!

    fan1.jpg

    fan2.jpg

It is noticeably poorer at cooling than the stock 92mm fan, probably due to the loss of the shroud: there's a clear gap for air to escape rather than being pushed through the heatsink. It's less annoyingly noisy, though, and I can't be faffed changing it again. It was a right faff to fit - thank goodness one of the fans I bought came with long bolts for a radiator, or it'd've been really awkward.

While I was in the BIOS fiddling with the fan curves again, I set up the Curve Optimiser. Amazingly, it no longer insta-crashes now I'm on a current BIOS. I'm sat here at -15, happy as a clam. Not that it's made any difference to performance, but it's helped counteract the poorer cooling of the new fan at least!
