I am having a problem with cpu temp.. it reaches 47/48 degress whilst using less than 10% of the CPU..... any ideas??

    my current system is:

    Cheiftec full tower case,
    K7N420 (nForce) mobo,
    Athlon XP1700+ w/ Dragon 3 HSF,
    512mb ram, ...etc...

3 80mm tt fans in the front,
    1 80mm on the side,
2 80mm in the back & a 120mm panaflow fan above the CPU...

It is definitely seated properly & has a thermal compound applied... although it is the standard themal compound which came with the HSF

    mobo make - MSI (Microstar)

... when i try & run Genome@home (uses un-used cpu to crunch out genomes - like Seti@home) it lasts 30sec to 5mins before the temp exceeds 53 degrees

nope... (well hasn't yet) just emmits a loud alarm sound from the internal speaker.... indicating the temp is too high... i shut down all running apps... etc... if the sound keeps going i shut it down... leave for 5 mins.... then turn back on

hmm...people do really well cooling wise with that case, and you have loads of fans in there so i dont see why you get such high temps...

    wat are the case temps...

on thing so the dragon orb is an awful heatsink...so performance wise it aint to great...

Check the airflow through your case. You should have intake fans at the front and an exhaust at the rear! And besides, with a dragon Orb you can't really expect too muc. They may look Ok but they aren't up to much cooling wise! Oh, and as Flix said, get some decent thermal compound!
