D'oh! Your car is illegal Cop computers yell "D'oh!" when they spot uninsured drivers Posted Feb 26th 2007 2:53PM by Paul Miller Some Thames Valley, UK cops claim it helps reaction times to have their onboard computer yell out Homer's "D'oh!" when it picks up on uninsured drivers, Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny" from The Shining when a stolen car zips by, and Dan Aykroyd's "People like this are a menace to decent society" for crime-linked cars. No word if this newfound reaction time is negated by an ensuing Simpsons-laced quote fest, punctuated with SNL reminiscence. Amazing what technology can do for you.
Not new. Fighter pilots will be familiar with "the Daughter's voice": research has shown that pilot's attention (which can get distracted by the complex demands of doing combat at several G's and hundreds of miles an hour) is drawn quicker and easier by a young female voice than any other type of voice.
Never heard it called 'the daughter's voice' before, more commonly its 'Bitchin betty'. Suppose your version is more acceptable to todays 'politically correct' armed forces though
"The Daughter's Voice" is the scientific term. "Bitchin' Betty" is probably its more apt colloquial designation.
But, Homer Simpson? Geez, that's a sad state of affairs when the technology is used like that. Why not just have it say, "Stolen" or "Crime Car" and uh, "doh"?
You're missing the point there. People are socially/contextually programmed to react to certain sounds and expressions. When people are faced with a boring and repetitive task in which reaction time is important, you need to have a stimulus that gets through to them. This may require tapping into this programming.
So, when they leave the garage and speed off, their computer starts playing/singing "Batman!" I get it. It's still sad. But, as Spock would say, "Humans are such illogical creatures."
I would program the computers to yell. "GET YOUR F**KING PETAL TO THE G*D D*MN FLOOR, YOU DAMN PIG!!!" and it will actually say the stars too. "F STAR STAR King"
I read an article about the woman who did the voice recordings for the older (F-4 era) systems ad who was the original "Bitchin Betty". She was a receptioniust or some such for Lockheed and actually had a southern accent, which they filtered out for the final system.
