When one day when I get good service out of them then we will talk again and I will never get brainwashed from the propaganda.

Nexxo would you say then there is an issue in hospitals with trying to replace highly trained roles with several under trained staff under a trained professional to cut costs?

I'm not saying that you should not feel angry or upset, but don't let that tempt you to making sweeping generalisations. That way madness lies.

My impression is that many NHS managers feel overwhelmed with a double whammy of cut-backs while having to worry about job security during the reorganisation of commissioning. It is hard to focus on creative solutions to a complex problem while you have to look for a new job. You have more immediate priorities of personal survival on your mind, and there's no incentive for coming up with solutions when you know you'll be made redundant the day after.

Only Lansley could come up with this spectacular self-destruct: to make people fight to keep the boat afloat while telling them that they will be kicked overboard regardless.

I used the NHS as an example because I know a bit of what goes on behind the scenes. People who don't make all sorts of assumptions. Not necessarily unreasonable ones (although often they are, as happens when people are SASH: scared/angry/sick/hurt) but still wrong ones, because they only see one side of the picture. I showed the other side where the NHS was concerned. Nobody chooses to be a crap doctor or nurse, or indeed manager. But circumstances are challenging and people who are in a state of SASH are, well less objective.

Analogously, you don't know the other side of policing. Nobody decides to join the force to become a crap, lazy, corrupt officer. Like no parent intends to raise their kid as a criminal little ned, as nobody was just waiting to suddenly go on a looting and torching spree through the shops of London and no police was just ready for them with the right policy, equipment and manpower right on the spot. People can unexpectedly find themselves in very difficult and emotionally heightened situations with little internal or external resources to cope, and hence make poor decisions or be ineffectual in their actions.

They cannot keep a personal eye on your car just because it is parked there. Police procedure does not allow cops to just open the weapons locker and storm out to confront Post Office robbers (they have public safety to consider, for one). This is not America. You know, the one where they have the Three Strikes rule and they can indefinitely detain you without charge; the one with the biggest crime rate and prison population in the world, so that tough approach worked. You want your camera and car to be safe? Go live in Iran. Your personal possessions are very safe there --at a price.

The "they didn't give me the personal attention I feel I deserve" complaint seems to me a bit child-like. When we are SASH, it invokes all sorts of attachment behaviours, including a desire for a parent to comfort, protect and look after us, and anger and upset when they don't. We all have that. But just as I had to do when my number plates were stolen (twice) my car's side torn off by a lorry that just drove on, and then --just as it was pristinely repaired-- it got keyed, the adult in us reminds us we're adults, and that there are realistic limits to what we can expect from the world.

And to be honest, given the endless times you see an "armed assailant" shot down by the police, and it turns out its some innocent citizen going about their business, that's a dammed good thing.

Even the specialist firearms teams, who are supposed to be trained to be calm and rational are not. They all seem to have a John Wayne attitudes along the lines of "YES! I've got a GUN to play with".

So, to sum up, they don't deal with the petty crimes which are the major concern to most of the people who actually pay their wages, harass easy targets like motorists, fail to protect witness from the criminals and then wonder why they have no support from the population at large?

As some say, sure, not all police are like this. But the sad thing is, those are slowly becoming the exception rather than the rule...

Actually I do have a small insight into the NHS both my mother and my aunt worked in Maudsley hospital from just after the war up to retirement, Ironically my mother ended up a patient there with Parkinson disease, Also a mate's wife is a staff nurse at Truro Hospital Cornwall so I'm not entirely ignorant about the NHS, And the new systems now in place in the welsh NHS is a disgrace soon to be implemented UK wide.

But the case of the keyed cars sure no biggie can be repainted, The point I made was that the local police officer just implied it didn't happen 5 cars and it didn't happen was he blind? didn't even write it down ffs yet there he was standining in front of the car.

Yes the Police work 24 hours but the Public Enquiry Offices (front of house) are normally staffed by Civillian staff that are unable (legally) to deal with certain issues without passing the case over to a Police Officer.

I'm sure you'd be the first to complain if nobody was available to come out to a house burglary or even worse crime because instead of paying a police officer to be on shift they paid them to staff a desk 24 hours a day instead.

The police simply do the have the budgets to deal with all crimes with a full investigation so have to prioritise some instances against others. No offence to your son but a stolen mobile phone is low-level crime and will loose out to other much more severe crimes. Physical possessions can be easily replaced, a persons life cannot.

I'm sure if you want to pay for a much larger police force they will deal with all crimes super fast.. oh wait quite the opposite is happening to spending more money on the police. So if you want to moan about it vote for a different government who's not going to cut public sector budgets so drastically.

One of the main problems IMO is the paperwork and the fear if getting of sued/fired.

In some cases the paperwork is needed but it would be better if they were on patrol instead.

Would recommend this to anyone first, lead by example - see it behind the scenes then feel free to comment after actually doing it.

Could we have some examples of these innocent citizens being killed? I'd love to hear them.

The Police have to weigh up everything using PLAN; Proportionate, legal, accountable and neccesary. Once Mr Smith phones in the £5 criminal damage to his fence, a call record is made, which cannot be deleted. That record must have a crime report linked to it within 72 hours, which again cannot be deleted. That crime report must have an investigating officer carry out every 'reasonable line of enquiry' to identify and prosecute an offender. Every crime report is audited on a daily basis by numerous people to make sure this is done.

The thing that most people struggle with is the proportionate bit. I'll give an example (but I'll keep it simple for you):

You're on a train when for seemingly no reason a female approaches you takes your old Ipod classic from off your lap, and runs off. Before you catch up the train stops and she runs off down the tracks out of sight.

Before I explain what the Police would do; What would you expect them to do?

The only people that are shot by the police are carrying a weapon themselves, I'm not sure where you live but I certainly don't know any innocent citizens that walk about carrying firearms and/or other weapons. This is the UK not the USA.

And I doubt you've ever talked to a firearms authorised officer or know a thing about the recruiting process for them either. You do know the firearms trained officers aren't just given a gun and then exempt from the law, they are PERSONALLY liable both professionally and legally when they fire the trigger and can be convicted of murder if the shoot an unarmed person.

In my books that's a huge responsibility and is not just handed out to anyone who asks, the training (and re-certifying) process for that responsibility is strict and very robust.

I'd totally agree with this, you will see a very different side to the police than you hear about on the news!

This bugs me. Please suggest some measures that should be put in place to better protect witnesses. Also, if you could, jump out of the bubble-wrapped cuckoo land you're in and be realistic with your answers.

This has not happened once or twice as it has happened now 5 times within store. Did I vote for a different Government yes I did hence I am moaning. Still what I cannot get over if someone goes to the police station and no one there and still get requested to comeback tomorrow. When you answer them that they do look busy they answer you back by saying " Are you say that I am lying ?"But let it be a traffic offence that's when all the alarms go off.

Unfortunately mistakes do happen, and cases where innocent people die are in the minority. There are many thousands of times firearms officers are deployed and I'd be willing to bet close to 99% do not end in someone being shot - these cases do not make the news.

I'd rather take my chances with an armed UK Officer than a US Officer. This side of the pond I'm likely to walk away alive.

Your son has had his phone stolen five times within a store? I think he needs a lesson in keeping hold of his possessions!

His phone stolen once and then asked to come back the next day. Now if I told customers in my store to come back the next day could you imagine the grief the company would get.

5 times that phones have been stolen or snatched from people within a mobile store that I managed. Which also has DVD footage and a customer got assaulted, Retailers today might as well leave the store unattended and just let people walk out with the goods.
No one attends yet as I have said before if we tackle them and use reasonable force to get the stuff back we then get into trouble for that. Who is at fault here me or them. Do I agree with the laws the is given to them no I do not, did I vote for the government that is now in control or the one before no I did not. Did I vote ? yes I did.
There just seems no urgency whatsoever. Godsake man I was in the cops for seven years and have been there. Were we short hell yeah but there was a sense of urgency in the matter. Not a case of comeback tomorrow.
I have support from other members here but leave them out of its I say what is on my mind and had a rant about it, hence the rant column in General Like so many times people have made a comment of say retailers like PCworld they have a rant about it maybe to get it off there chest. If this happened once I would have just kept it to myself but it seems like everything else just keep it to yourself before you get your head bitten off and that is exactly why things never change.

That is my rant over and carry on having your digs at me no probs my shoulders are wide enough and yes I might be ignorant but it goes both ways and some people live a sheltered live.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, I'm in the UK, not the USA.

Someone asked about innocents being shot in the UK. OK, google is your friend:-

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4712061.stm
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/mar/05/police-shooting-james-ashley
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...tally-blasts-man-groin-50-000-volt-Taser.html

Last one's a taser / tazer, but the principle is the same.

Now, since you couldn't be bothered to google a few links showing the police shooting innocents, google a few for me from a major UK newspaper or TV news station showing where a UK policeman has been tried, convicted and imprisoned for the murder of an innocent who they shot or otherwise killed.

"Can" be convicted doesn't mean "will" be...
