Windows Copy WinXP to another hard drive?

    I'm getting a new hard drive for my server on Thursday. I only just re-installed recently and can't be bothered to do it again.

    Is it possible to copy everything from one hard drive to another? And then boot the new hard drive?

    I'm getting mixed views on this. Some people are saying WinXP won't like it, others telling me to just do an Xcopy through command prompt. Someone even mentioned that the registry won't copy.

    Is there any definite answer?

    If you have PowerQuest DriveImage 7, that'll do a direct copy-to-copy without missing anything. For free... dunno. Ask someone else :p

    Is the drive FAT32 or NTFS? If it's NTFS you won't be able to xcopy everything without actually being in Windows - which then means you can't copy anything currently in use i.e. the registry.

    i havent ever had it work sucsessfully ... but then again i was using ghost.

    Easiest thing to do is to tkae both harddrives to another machine put them both in as slaves and copy over...Should work if you try to boot them in the machine that the win xp was installed on, no?

    Ghost works fine for me, but any version before 2003 didn't work correctly for me.

    We use Ghostcast 2001, that has no probs with XP.

    Too many people have mentioned 'Ghost' for it to be a hunch. I'll give it a go...
