It seems that just maybe the 5 GHz on air figure might be a tad on the dishonest side. I've been wondering how a chip very similar to the i7, admittedly with a lower TDP of 95W, which is still higher than the Yorkfield Core 2 Quads, could OC so high. Well according to this news article, Intel also managed to run an i7 to 5.07 GHz on meagre air cooling. Where can you buy this magical cooler?, well that's the kicker you can't, it's a super-duper Intel black-ops part, that probably costs more than a small car! So I truly hope that the i5's 5 GHz figure was not created using this special cooler, so Intel & its partners could steal some limelight and stop people investing in an AMD system. Hope I'm wrong about this. http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/6/7/intel-air-cools-core-i7-to-507-ghz!.aspx
Unfortunately I can't put into word how much I dislike this Mr. Piednoel. I'm afraid it would cause some legal actions when done in English. Some of the Intels PR-stunts and Mr. Piednoels statements have been so much beyond good taste it's just not even funny. My 2 cents. I just don't put any value to the OC results ran on hand-picked CPU and a cooler you can't buy.
I wonder from what material the special Intel cooler is constructed, gold or silver would work well. I wish the motherboard producers would reveal which cooler they used to achieve a 5 GHz OC on the i5, it would suck balls if they used a similar 'special' cooler.
It will just have been a super cherry picked cpu, Not realistic at all for the retail chips, I think its the same guy as Dr.Who on XS. Not a nice guy, complete ....... And intel arent releasing these till September are they? So still a lot of time for real results.
Yes he's the same ****. I don't really like XS to begin with, there seems to be no limitations to the length of the signatures! As for the not-yet-launched CPUs. Yeah that's a good point. They did something similar with the i7 AFAICR. Crazy Finns overclocked a Phenom X2 to the WC in 3dmark using liquid helium, after which Intel gave a yet-to-be-launched CPU to Fugger(?) to make a new record. What the hell's the point of 3dmark ranking when some guys are using hardware that's only available to them...
I was just thinking that. Also the IHS has been removed and the heatsink bonded directly to the die's with no air gaps at all, lapped everything. Then tests performed in an Air conditioned lab at -20 degree's.
i5 @ 5ghz is a joke. This will not be possible on actual release to mainstream. i saw all the rumours of i7 hitting 5ghz yet id say that the most common overlock on an i7 is 3.8Ghz with some pushing to 4Ghz on AIR. 4.2-4.4 ive seen on water. hell PII was suposed to overclock like a beast yet in reality it again failed and most clocks ive seen are around 3.7-3.9Ghz on AIR i reckon even if i5 are beasts at overclocking like the dual core E8x00, then we still only gunna see 4-4.2Ghz on AIR out of them. maybe some 5Ghz on phase or water if they are truely brilliant.
yeah that caught my eye, wonder if i should blow the dust off my PII 233mhz and clock it to 3.9GHz on air!
lol thought i may catch people out with that. seen it wrote like this in a couple of places makes sense although basically is a pentium II to anyone old enough
