Just read the article on the new processors and the conclusion seems to be that a 920, though a little slower at stock is still the best choice out there. Do people agree with this and would they still stick with a 920 - x58 board combo? I am in the market for upgrading
I will have both a 920 system and an 750 system up and running by the end of wed. This I feel should be a "fair" test as both run at 2.66ghz stock so I will let you all know as this will be coming from someone who owns both and is "forced" to make a decission rather than just sayin 920 is better blah blah blah even though it costs a hell of a lot more. Andy
Lol... I cant really "afford to". One will be my gaming rig and the other my every day rig. The 920 due to having 2x 295cards will be the gaming rig and the 750 the every day. If the power saving of running the 750 is as significant as I hope (as it wont have stupid graphics etc) then I will happily be keeping it. If not Ill be putting the parts on here as a job lot for a fair price. (that means no profit what so ever and probable loss). Andy
lol, the netbook is becoming my every-day comfy-lap-computer, (looking for bluetooth mouse + a piece of wood as mouse mat and im sorted) and my main one is my gaming rig. i7 920 is unbeatable in performance. but i choose i5 750 because in terms of price/performance, this is unbeatable. single thread matches i7 920, Bit-tech review shows at 4.2Ghz it is comparable to a 4Ghz i7 920 in all multithreaded cases. @andrew, how are you going to overclock 750 without a good cooler on the market?
from what i gather in the article and from a quick twitter to-and-fro with Tim: i5-750 is the new CPU to have, UNLESS you can get an i7-920 for a good price. You chaps in the UK are lucky, as the price of the 920 seems to be in free fall (GBP 235,- to GBP 205,- in a week, according to Tim). Around here, the cheapest i can find the 920 for is a rough equivalent of 250 GBP. There's no point in going i7-920 (IMHO) if you're buying new now. The 6-cores that'll fill the 1366 socket are going to be atrociously expensive, if you ask me (pure speculation, based on the pricing diff between a C2D and a C2Q). With the P55 platform hopefully being cheaper than the X58 one, i am hoping that the current Chaos surrounding i5 and new i7 vs old i7 will subside by the end of the year, when i shall hopefully be looking at an upgrade... HOPEFULLY. The aftermarket cooling solutions will be out quickly and quietly, if BT's show of O/C potential on the i5-750 is anything to go by. My thought is (in conclusion): If you can get an i7-920 for cheap, go with it (unless you're one of those people that upgrades every 3 months). If not, i5 seems the one to have, and P55 could bee a nice platform, provided Intel can decide on a socket and stick with it...
Im glad your getting on with the netbook, it was a fantastic little purchase for myself but I couldnt justify having it aswell as numerous PC's and a high end laptop. As for getting cold... Im going to be using this... It has slanted mounts for the cpu socket that fits lga 775 and 1366. 1156 mounts happen to be in the middle of these slants from what I can gather. If not I will mod the block so it works Andy
For gaming currently, i5 is the better buy unless you want the absolute best performance. Using heavily multithreaded apps such as video encoding, photoshop, 3DS Max etc then you'll need core i7 HT.
Bagged one of those MSI motherboards at 12:15 today, so I'll probably be after an i5-750, or I could always sell it if I change my mind
