Hi all, Right first off i know that new processors are faster than old processors even thou they both have the same ghz. I just dont know how you tell or what to look for to compare the speed differences. I take the new range of processor out later this month are faster than the slighter older lot (q6600's n such). To sum it all up i just want to know how do i go about telling the speed difference between processors? Hope i make sense and it isnt to hard to answers thanks
check the benchmarks on the internet? try ( tomshardware.com ) they have all charts for CPU / VGA / HD Good luck bro
Right treat me like im a complete idiot, pretend i dont know much (wont take much to do) What do i need to compare on the processors and is lower/higher better? Obviously i know higher GHZ is better but comparing newer to older processors that goes out of the windows.
Don't use Tom's hardware for anything. What processors do you want to compare, and what do you what to do with them - play games Crysis, half life 2 etc or do you want to encode videos etc etc?
Nukeman, it all depends on what you want to do with your processor. At work we mainly do number crunching and we've found that an old Athlon64 3400+ is just as fast as a more modern Pentium 650. I would look around the internet and see what the benchmarks get. Be careful when you are comparing benchmark scores though. The only ones that will be relevant to you will be the ones that are running applications/games that you will be / are running yourself at the same resolutions as you with the same video hardware as you. Hope that helps. Andy
Im after knowing for 2 reasons, 1 because i dont know how, just for that simple fact and 2 i will be building a new pc start of next year, so with the release of the new but pricey processors and the attraction of the older cheaper processors i thought it be handy to work out for myself which would be better for me. the 2 im matching up are the q6600 and the Intel Core i7 920 mainly for heavy gaming and light media editing. O and for bragging rights to I often do check out the reviews of processor but tend to get lost in the sea of information when it gets to benchmarks. Suppose i could do with a sort of guide explaining what is what concerning benchmarks on different programs
I got a fair amount of money coming my way so i intend of making a beast of a machine that will hopefully last a fair few years then rinse and repeat.
Cache plays an important part with gaming and the like. More = better Comparing Q6600 to i7 920 is pretty difficult. You can't compare the processors alone, there are a whole host of other variables. The i7 uses tripple channel DDR3 RAM (I can't remember whether I read that it can use dual channel, may have dreamt that), the Q6600 uses dual channel DDR3/2 RAM for starters. If you have the money, go i7, the 920 really looks like the one to go for at the moment.
o im defo looking at the i7 920 Trying to sell my q6600 now, main reason why im asking. When i do build a pc i get all modern stuff and then basically leave it for a few years, then build a complete new 1, in my eyes thats alot cheaper than buying the best bang for buck products and keep upgrading every few months. People were saying thou somewhere that the q6600 is easyish to get to 4ghz which the 920 can hit on air aswell, but surely the 920's 4ghz is a damn sight quicker than the q6600's 4ghz
