I think "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" by Ac/Dc is actualy more in character (hevier and more meanacing) when covered by Exodus. Considering it's a song about murder.

"I know I'm going to get stick for this, but what the hell.
I preferred All Saints version of "Under the Bridge" to that of The Red Hot Chili Peppers" lol I used to belong to an entire forum who thought this although I have only listend to the chiles version. You are definatly not alone.

As for bad covers trivium's cover of master of puppets was dreadfull, they missed out half the notes!

Wasn't going to post bad covers, but the cover of Walk This Way by Girls Aloud/Sugarbabes is just awful!

Good cover (well i think so) Sweat Leaf by Godsmack.

The first one that came to my head was Whisky In The Jar. I think the Metallica version is better.

I think Under the Bridge is harder to call because the All Saints version sounds quite different to the Red Hot Chilli Pepper version. Both are good in their own right

What else is there - Royksopp
What else is there - Royksopp (Thin White Duke remix)

A song which is so good, a remix which is so incredible, that I just don't which is better.

I think Lacrimosa have a better version. Both is good, though!

    As for good covers:

Helloween - Blue Suede shoes :D

(Well, it's not really good, but it's fun)

    OCRemix - Krool Intentions.

Its possibly the single best piece of electronic music in existence.

Maybe that's the difference. I heard Limp Bizkit's cover first before I heard The Who perform it. Everyone has their opinion though.

I've heard the song but to truthful I don't know if its the original or the cover, the one I heard is from the 90's, damn that was a good time then.

All along the Watchtower of course. Come to think of it, a lot of Dylan's stuff is done better as covers- Mr Tambourine Man, like a Rolling Stone, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Quinn the Eskimo...

Spiderbait's one was from a few years ago (2004 to be exact), the most popular (and known) cover of it was Ram Jam's one from 1977 the original is from 1933 James Baker (AKA Iron Head) and group (info taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Betty )

Funny you should mention that - I'm listening to the recently released FF7 OCRemix right now, and I've gotta say they did a fine job of it. Adding lyrics to several of the tracks made a pretty nice change. Some is kinda ehhh.... but overall it's great stuff.

Good cover songs are definitely rare, but one of the best I have heard would be Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" performed by Tool.

BTW: Only Pink Floyd can do Pink Floyd. Mentioning Korn and Pink Floyd in the same sentence is liable to open a spacial rift. Don't do it!

I agree with MaximusShow about Pink Floyd.

As to the original question. I always liked the Metallica version of Tuesdays gone much more than the Lynyrd Skynyrd version

hrmm ... how about Echo & the Bunnymen doing "People are Strange" for the Lost Boys soundtrack ...

    Jaco Pastoruis doing "Blackbird"

always preferred the Jerry Garcia Band version of "Dear Prudence", even over Souixie & Robert Smith's.

and Bungle - "Always on my mind" - originally recorded by Brenda Lee, covered by Elvis, made famous by Willie Nelson.

I don't think Manson should ever get any credit for taking songs that are originally quite dark and seedy yet sung like nursery ryhmes and sucking all the irony out of them to make them straight-laced-fashoinable-teen-goth-debauchery :miffed: ...but then I'm an opinionated asshole

Erm Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of the Beatles 'Dear Prudence' and Dylans 'It's all over now baby blue' covered by Them (Van Morrison vocals)
