I agree with Tim - the CPC'ers are going to be part of the community, merging the two forums, to me, means that rolling over their postcounts is perfectly acceptible tbh.

They are being tacked on :hehe:

edit: In fact I find Bit-tech being party to all this a sad affair. I thought the Dennis buyout was meant to make the web site/forum better. So far we seem to have copy+paste articles from a magazine, a blog a few years after blogging was cool, and you closing down another forum and suggesting it's members register here?

nothing wrong with a new influx of members, the bigger the community, the more people around to help those who need it.

Sifter had nothing to do with the decision to close the forums, and we chose to come here, we didn't have to, but our thirst for techy stuff brought us here. Anyway, I like it here :D

Yes it is, that was from the join of all the mags from Dennis publishing, it was closed down, so we moved over there.

    Well, two things happened.

    1) CustomPC moved to bit-tech. I'm happy with this move, we're on a working website. :)

    2) Dennis closed down it's shared forums between magazines. We don't like this part, so we made x404. X404 isn't meant to be a rival to CustomPCers moving to bit-tech, more somewhere where the existing community can move to.

Instead of looking at 'Posts: ###' try moving your eyes up a little and checking 'Join Date: ###' It's like witchcraft or something...

    +1

I'm not sure why people have made an issue about post counts being transferred, it's not like we're coming from a a knitting website, CPC was merged into Bit-Tech and therefore so should the post count.

Some of us spent a long time building up a vast number of irrelevant posts, it would be a shame to not have them recognised. :thumb:

Anyways, you can see where I come from from the tag under my username, I've not tried to sneak in with a Bit-Tech mask. :)

Why are CPC people making a fuss about getting post counts transferred? If that number isn't counting your posts then why show it? You're asking for an arbitrary number to be tacked onto your profile the only purpose of which is to say "hey, look at me, I posted lots at Custom PC, look how amazing I am."

It just smacks of the bit-tech and Dennis staff left holding the mess created by DI trying to appease the annoyed CPC regulars in the only way they can. Dennis Interactive screwed you over and that sucks, but you're on a new forum and should be starting afresh. It's simple common sense.

Who on bit-tech's fora wants to know someone posted 10 times, 100 times or 10,000 times at CPC? Can I read those posts? No. Is knowing you were an active part of the CPC community going to make me any more welcoming than if you were a newbie? Of course not. Quality, not quantity of posts is what counts.

Post count used to be a reasonable indicator of whether someone was an active part of the bit-tech community (unless you're Bindi and spam like there's no tomorrow), now it's just a number.

I see what your saying HugoB, but I think your looking at it the wrong way.

Whats happened is the Bit-Tech and CPC forums have been merged. This means rather than having two forums theyve combined them into one. Because bit-tech has the superior site, larger audience, etc its the bit-tech site that will host this forum. So when you say

"Who on bit-tech's fora wants to know someone posted 10 times, 100 times or 10,000 times at CPC?"

I can equally reply "Why would I want to know how many posts you had on the old bit-tech forum?". It seems unfair if, during a merger, half the party keeps its post count and the other half loses them.

    As for when you say

"hey, look at me, I posted lots at Custom PC, look how amazing I am."

thats just an argument against having post counts, but it has to apply equally to all parties concerned. Post counts are a bit like member-measuring, so maybe thats an argument for not having them on a forum :D

But I think in a more useful sense, post count reflects commitment and involvement, and hence (hopefully) skill and knowledge. So when you say

"Is knowing you were an active part of the CPC community going to make me any more welcoming than if you were a newbie? Of course not"

we're only newbies in the sense that we don't know where the sig option is in the options menu :D. Computer-wise there will be people newbier, equal and superior to you as in any forum.

Well I don't think that's the case. I haven't seen anyone making a big fuss about it (apart from a couple of people, both on the CPC and bit-tech side), and I don't appreciate the insinuation that we're all spoilt brats competing for higher post counts.

We were informed that it was possible to have our post counts transferred, so a few of us (I think about 20 or so) said "OK, I might as well since the forums have been merged, so it would make sense to merge our post counts as well". It's more about continuity more than anything else, and if you weren't part of the old community the I think you'd struggle to understand that. Some people don't care about it, and that's fine as well.

As said above, our join dates will always remain the same, and I don't want that to change either. For me, the join date signifies how long you have been part of a community (obviously) and I consider that a far more useful indicator than a member's post count or anything else.

    :hehe: do it.

As far as I'm concerned, the CPC community coming over here just means a load of new likeminded active forum members - great stuff! Makes complete sense to give them their postcount from CPC - it's for OUR benefit, as it lets us see how active they're likely to be. I don't understand the problem... is it that people don't want people that haven't made the effort to spam their way up to thousands of posts on bit-tech to be put in their high postcount club?
