Is what i read in a different forum correct, that you can make a strobe LED for a fan by simply hooking a LED between the RPM lead and ground.

    I.E, FAN RPM LED----------Resistor---LED----------Ground

On most fans the speed line goes low (0v) twice per rev IIRC, so you may need to hook the led/resistor to +V rather than ground. Or maybe the other poster has used the pull-up resistor as his led resistor and got enough current to light a led hooked to ground?

Never tried it, why not blaze the trail?

Looking at Nidec, the maximum Ic is on the low side for leds so be careful.
