    Much Oddness...

If you've been on bit-tech a while you might have known me for bashing Vista a lot as it simply would-not run stabally on my PC...
Thing is i seem to have fixed it in the most bizarre-way: changing the CPU :eeek:

X2 6000+ = unstable in vista, even if downclocked to less than stock speed, whilst being rock-stable in XP even when overclocked
X4 9950 phenom with identical mobo + rest of PC + same old vista install = rock stable in both vista and XP

very odd, when CPU's have problems they're generally very widely known, but i've never heard of problems with the X2 series and i've certainly never known a CPU being unstable with only one OS before...

Probably your old CPU was defective. Remember that Vista works differently then XP, and somehow, with XP it by-passed the problem (probably because of the lack of support of new technology... just a guess (but it does sound strange... hmm... maybe someone else that knows more about CPU in great details might know)).

I think vista generally puts a bit more strain on the system, and like goodbytes said, it seems to do it differently. Vista uses what you have got, so its generally using up more resources to keep you chugging along happily.

I could run certain settings, can't remember which, on XP but I couldn't in vista. Even with XP being fully loaded it would be stable as a rock, but vista wouldn't even stay on the desktop for a few minutes, knocked back my overclock and it was fine.
