Does anyone know of a CPU cooler for Socket 1156 that have the fan mounted 90degrees in relation to the motherboard and that isn't taller than 12cm?

It's going to cool an I3-540 in my HTPC, so it doesn't need to be high performance, but I want to utilize one of the chassis fans to draw air from the cooler (via a duct)and push it directly out of the case. The problem is that I only have about 12cm spacing for the cooler, and most I have seen so far are 13cm plus.

The i3's run pretty cool at stock settings anyway so I would have thought the stock cooler would be adequate for a HTPC build. I'm guessing you're not overclocking or anything? Is there a particular reason you need an aftermarket cooler?

These are the ones that I'm aware of with a height of under 120mm.

    Noctua C12P
Noctua C14 (with the fan underneath the heatsink fins)

Isn't the intel reference cooler also pretty small? I appreciate there's a desire to direct the airflow, but I've had zero cooling issues with the E7200 in an antec fusion case using intel's reference cooler, which blows the air straight up. Quiet too.
HTPC load isn't all that demanding.

Thanks guys. I'll see what I can find of those :)

Cooling isn't the issue at all. The reference cooler is slightly noisy, so I was hoping to eliminate it. My main rig does actually run a stock cooler. The older coolers seems to me more quiet for some reason.

I built a HTPC into an Antec Fusion a little while ago. Im using a 1156 i3 530 and im really happy with the cooler & fan i got.

    Cooler

    Fan

The cooler performs so well with the i3 at stock, that i dont know if i even need the fan lol. But its set to pwm auto in the bios, so it only spins up when/if it is required.

Yeah, the I3 doesn't seem to produce much heat. Especially when it sees a maximum load at about 4-6%. ;)

That Titan cooler looks very nice, but I'm still to find a shop in Norway that sell them. We had a good shop that specialized in case modding and overclocking equipment. They even made their own coolers which were pretty good but as with all other shops, they got bought and now they are basically just like every other shop. :(

Maybe I'll just cut the fan of the stock cooler and make a duct for it... :dremel:

i think any cooler that has the fan "standing up" is going to be noisy due to your height requirements. because your limited to a <120mm fan, most of which i find to be buzzy unless you can get away with very low speeds.

if quiet is key, i would stick with a 120mm fan at minimum. a "flat" cooler like bdigital posted, only one designed for a 120mm fan would be sweet. a second low speed 120mm fan in the rear exhaust opening would pull what little heat was generated out of the case with or without a duct.

I'm not planning to use the supplied fan anyway. The chassis fans will do all the work. Less fans=less noise. :) I may even try to ditch the duct altogether since the chassis fans sit sight beside the CPU. I may even get away with a passively cooled CPU.

That looks perfect! I even found a supplier on ebay that will ship to Norway. (Postage is more than the actual cooler, but still cheaper than trying to source one locally. :duh: )

Thanks for the help guys. :D
