Just rebuilding my PC and fitting a new CPU cooler. With the backplate screwed on to a tightness that I'm happy with and feels right, there's still a 4mm or so gap between the cooler mooting bracket and the rubber grommets.

I'm happy with the tension. Can someone please tell me if I'm right, or should I tighten thinks up so tight the mounting brackets buckle?

    Thanks

    Mobo : Asus P6TDeluxe (socket 1366)
Cooler : Skythe Big Shuriken 2B

I can't imagine that it's a problem, but it seems odd to me that there's no additional nut that goes on the thread between the grommet and the heatsink mount (the grommet appears to be a bit redundant).

Looking at the angle of the mount though, tension wise, I'd say you're fine.

Does that knurled thing have the threaded part on it, and screws into a threaded hole on the rear of the mobo?
Or is the threaded part protruding through from the back, and then knurled bit is just a thumbscrew like nut?

If it's the former, then I'd have thought it should be okay, as the tension is between the back of the mobo with whatever bracket is back there and the heatsink base, and the nut is just stopping it from coming up.

If it's the latter, then as jinq says, I would have expected a spacer to fill the space to create the tension. Although maybe not, know I think about it. It would still just be pulling on the back of the mobo, so shouldn't be able to come loose or use that space anyway.

Does beg the question of why the rubber washers are there though. Are there some on the back?

Don't tighten it till the bracket buckles, :D, I'm imagine you might get some mobo snappage if you tried that, :D

Isn't the usual test, pick up the board by the cpu cooler and put it above your head, if it stays on it's fine, if you get covered in mobo it's not fine, :D

    This.

From very very back to front it's:

    Screw
    Back plate
    Mobo
    Grommet
Threaded insert, locked in place as it's hex shaped in hex shaped depression.
    Mounting bracket
    Thumb screw securing threaded insert

At the end of the day the cooler is on tight but not crazy tight, and as far as I can tell it's level.

There's certainly no extra spacers or anything. I think in fairness 1366 is a bit of a 'it's compatible so shut up' addition as it's a new cooler.

    It'll do :)

Looking at the pictures on here, looks like they've got a gap between the bracket and the board too.
    So yeah, seems fine.

remember when tightening the screws work in a figure X. i.e. bottom right -> top left -> top right -> bottom Left and work through this circuit a few times adding a little more pressure each time until the fit is snug but not bending things.

Having the plate flat on the CPU is more important then which TIM you use!
