Yo Got myself a non-working laptop and seeming as I have no idea why it won't work I decided to have a look at the cpu itself. Fear my bad photography. Anywho, that black spot. ... ... is that bad? (very technical) it's a Pentium M I belive. Never had a run in with one so I'm guessing.
Yeah that seems rather buggered to me, looks like something caught fire on there, but there also seems to be a scrape mark aswell which dosent look to health either! lol! have you tried clean the mark off to see how deep it goes?
Burnout, I now feel very stupid as the spot was just some thermal interface stuck to the CPU so now thats off it "looks" fine but the lappy still dose bugger all. No bleeps, bloops, nothing. Most I get is the power button flashes on and off. I hate laptops, at lest with a desktop machine I can swap parts out. But I've only got the one laptop.
Arm yourself with plenty of space and a small screwdriver. Take it *completely* apart then reassemble it. I've found that sometimes, for some reason, it can bring a laptop back to life. Whilst apart, you can check for any obvious damage, too.
Sounds like a plan Kenco. Got no other real options at this point. Might try a new CPU as their fairly dirt cheap on ebay.
No idea to the 1st, no idea to the 2nd. My uncle gave me the lappy as it had broken. No clue why nor did he care. He just bought a new one for his broadband.
Just be wary of which screws go where, obviously, as some are likely to be different threads, longer, wider etc although it should be fairly obvious what goes where, tbh. Be careful when disconnecting the film-like connectors (an example would probably be the keyboard cable) as they can be damaged easily, as can the connectors. I took one apart a while ago just to see what's inside the things and how they are generally laid out, it was dud so no worries. After reassembling it, it started charging the battery after plugging it in so I thought, "What the hey" and it switched on and booted up fine. Very weird, still works to this day afaik. Take it steady though and you'll be fine.
yeah, ill second the thing about taking a lappy apart seems to fix it.. also, if you have one that sorta works, sometimes it can completely bomb it... its a 50/50 shot
Do what I did when I bought a 2nd-hand laptop - Google for the service manual, it will save you hours of trying to find that last screw holding things together!
...damn....this might not go well then. I'll get round to it soon, busy doing college work stuff. When I do I'll update you all on how it went.
its the ram, my old dell used to do that untill i relised that it was a dead dimm, it would just power on the screen would flicker and turn off again.
