    Hi there,

I'm running an XP2200+ in an MSI Nforce K7N2 Delta-ILSR Motherboard. The cpu is running at stock multiplier, FSB and voltage, and was previously running in a Gigabyte GA7DXR(not +). The thing is, in that board, MBM would report a temp of around 42-48 degrees load, depending on ambient. In the new board, with the same HSF and chip, and still using AS3, MBM reports 67 degrees!!

Naturally this is a bit worrying, so I even took the HSF off, cleaned it and the core of AS3, and carefully reapplied it, but I get the same results. I'm wondering if it's a fault with the temp probe, as the machine runs 100% stable, so does anyone else have the same board and the same issue with the temps reported?

    Cheers,
    John

My XP2400+ would run at around 58degrees under load, but was still stable. Unless its really unstable i shouldn't worry too much about it. You could try some thermal paste and a better cooler.

If its stable then its ok... As a rough guide, feel the base of the heatsink, if its hot to touch, then its likely to be 55°C+, if its warm but not hot then under 50...
If it feels really warm then the probe is correct, if it feels midly warm then its wrong....

    Thanks for the tips guys.

The heatsink is a coolermaster copper effort (can't remember the exact model number but it's definitely rated well above what I'm running) and it's never too warm - i.e. it's considerably below the hottest I could comfortably touch for a long time -, and I'm using arctic silver 3 between it and the cpu, so I'm guessing everything's in order and it's the probe that's badly calibrated.

By the way, if anyone else has a similar problem with an MSI, try flashing to the latest bios - I read on their site that it contains a fix for the temp diagnostics, but it didn't solve my problem.

Thanks again - a little reassurance never hurts.

It's the probe for sure then.

I mean everyone knows nothing can beat artic silver

never rely on the probes onboard for reliable information on CPU/motherboard temperatures.

My motherboard temperature is over 3'C out... I wouldn't want to know how far out my CPU probe is :)

I take it you have only applied the tiniest smidgeon of AS3? of course if the thermal contact between the die and the HSF is no good the HS will never get that hot. Having said that though even though i would probably be pooing bricks if my temp got as high as 67C if its stable dont worry. Having said that my mate has a similar boarb, i dont remember the number but its the same one with onboard GFX, has normal temp readings with a 1800+ and a pabst silent HS.

Thanks again guys. Just flashed the bios up to the newest available one using MSI's live update utility. I thought it had worked before from a DOS based utility - it said it had, but obviously not, because now I get temps of 34 idle, 45 load. Pretty pleased with that. The moral of the story is - if you have this board (fivecheebs it's not the one with onboard gfx, and fyi I followed arcticsilver instructions to the letter, properly cleaned the core and hs before applying a tiny amount), get the BIOS update and use the live update utility (it's much easier anyway!!)

    Cheers,
    John

Yea sorry mate i should have been clearer, i knew it was not the ILSR but one of the K7N2 series that included GFX. Glad youve fixed it now, must put your mind at rest :)
