    Hi,

I have 4GB (4x1GB) of DDR2 running in my Dell machine. It is PC-6400 and the BIOS lists the RAM Frequency as 800MHz.

However, CPU-Z and Speccy both report the RAM Frequency as 398.5 MHz. This is less than half the quoted 800MHZ. Why is this, and would I see a noticeable performance increase if it was the full 800MHz? Here are the CPU-Z screens, if it helps:

Also, CPU-Z lists my chipset as P35/G33/G31. I don't really understand all of the motherboard/chipset stuff, but how do I tell what chipset it actually is?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The RAM frequency is only half that of the effective frequency so you'll find it's actually running at 800Mhz fine. The page of CPU-Z isn't your actual RAM speed/timings either, only recommened settings based on JEDEC guidelines, you'll want to go back a tab to 'memory' and the actual speeds will be in there.

In the very simplest terms, DDR is double data rate so the 400mhz you are seeing is 800mhz.

    OK, I understand that.

I would like to upgrade to 8GB of DDR2, but RAM is so expensive at the moment.

Some people are speculating that DDR2 is not likely to come down in price, as manufacturers step up DDR3 production and finish with DDR2. Could there be any truth in this?
