I'm not sure why you would want surround sound on mp3s.

I can't really see much use for surround sound other than on video-capable PMPs, as normal audio really wouldn't benefit from it. Saying that, having an x-fi-esque chip on a DAP does sound sound rather appealing, especially if it'll improve audio quality noticably.

Pointless to he extreme. Even music albums properly mixed for multi chnnel don't have anything added to them, usually they just sound bizzare like your sitting in the middle of the band. A Multi channel effect on stereo file? can't see it being much ue.

The CMSS stereo to 5.1 upmix that you get with Audigys (and I guess XFi cards) really does add to the music. Not sure it'd help on a PMP unless you had it hooked up to decent speakers though.

Well the x-fi cards do, according to the reviews, manage to create an incredibly realistic 5.1 effect through stereo headphones. Having said that, I can't understand how a surround-sound soundstage would be an improvement over a more realistic stereo one. As Comrade Penguin rightly said, you don't usually sit in the middle of the band at a concert/gig, unless you're one lucky fan.

I've used it for two years, and it's worth the hastle of going into eax settings to turn it off every time I start up a game and on again when I want to play music -- It makes the sound much richer. It doesn't make you feel like you're in the middle of the band at all -- that's just the multitrack ones that Comrade Penguin is talking about.

I think it might just be a gimmick stereo sound quality is better than surround anyway isn't it ?

That's all well and good, but I wish they'd come up with a USB version of their X-Fi first. How difficult could that be, if they're already working on a version that fits in an MP3 player?

The only option right now for a USB sound card from Creative is the SoundBlaster Live!. :miffed:
