I had a strange transaction on my CC once, which was refunded immediately, but I cancelled the card afterwards. I've been lucky since, but I'm careful about where I use it.
As of yet I havn't been defrauded as such, I did however get ripped off by Pipex who decided that after I had canceled my account with them they would still take the monthly payments... canceled the card first thing. Also, a nice thing I thought, when I attempted to buy my new PC a little while back it was blocked... rather annoying but after a 5 minute phone call to Abbey's security department i found out my card had been blocked to prevent fraud etc, 5 seconds later it was cleared and i made the purchase. After that i feel much happier when it comes to my card.
I haven't gotten hit, but I've had the bank cancel a couple of cards because they had been comprimised. It was annoying to go try to spend my paycheck and get the card declined when I knew I had money in the bank. I called up my bank and the first question was "Well, do you have any money in the account?" um, yes, oh, you do, hmm, let me transfer you... <next person> I understand you're having problems, do you have any money in the account? oh, you do, hmmm this goes on for a while until finally they tell me that my card was one of several thousand that had been "comprimised" by a local merchant, and so they had put a $100 / day limit on my card until I got a new one. Unfortunatly, they didn't bother telling me this when they did it, and this happened to me twice!
I haven't had a card compromised, although my Mum did. It was one that she used for internet transactions only, makes me wonder. I'm waiting for identity theft, though - apparently my personal info was among several thousand sets compromised in one of the 'oops-someone-lost-a-laptop' events that seem to be happening a lot right now. The company enrolled everyone involved in an identity theft monitoring program for a couple of years, which was a good response on their part. Nothing's happened yet - knock on wood - but someone out there has my name, birthdate, SSID, and everything else necessary to make my life hell. Oh boy.
This is why its fun to work at a credit union where I can block a card and have a new one ready to go in about five minutes If security is such an issue, why not just use cash? I have never turned someones cash down because it was declined or compromised for some reason.
I think my bank card in france has been comprimised, my account always gets rinsed about 3 days after i get paid leaving me in the **** half the time. stupid language barrier.
At my old work, we never accepted credit cards over the phone, they needed to be in store with the physical card, and had to have a PIN or sign the receipt. Had some young guys try to buy a PS3 where the signature didn't match. what was funny was that about 2 months later they came in, and we recognised them, and one of them said to another guy "Didn't you try to forge a signature here?" which made us all crack up when he shook his head and tried to deny it
