Here's Altron, for your semi-annual dose of nonsensical ranting. First, some background - A friend of mine is obsessed with this hobby. He spends loads of time browsing like 30 different modding sites, and has a Five Year Plan or something like that to get a kickin' PC. He started putting it together nearly a year ago, and it's still not done. So are things for the unemployed students. He started with the case and is slowly buying components. At the moment, he has everything except the motherboard, which will probably be an A8N-something or other. Everything he buys, he spends a month reading reviews. Me, on the other hand - I just bought a new computer. I kinda went to newegg, selected random parts, made a thread "is this equipment alright?" then bought it less than 6 hours later. So we were eating lunch today and he was browsing some sites. We were looking through all the forums then it hit me like a brick dropped out of an airplane - I have a kickass computer. I went straight from the bottom 20% of bit tech PCs to the top 20%. I'm seeing all these threads discussing Venice 3000+s and Opty 146s, and I'm like "Damn, my PC is better than that! [X2 3800]". I don't know why I'm posting it, but it's a weird feeling browsing. Previously it was like window shopping, with discussions of high end gear that I couldn't afford. Now it's like wearing an Armani suit and window shopping at Walmart. Not quite to that degree, but it loses it's luster. It's an unsettling feeling. I bought a P4-2400B nearly 3 years ago, and at the time, AMD was more popular. Even though I had an upper-middle class CPU, it wasn't popular, and reviews and stuff I read were for comparable stuff. Then a month ago, I had total crap compared to even the 'budget gamer' systems. Now I have an X2 3800, which, although it's not one of the more popular chips compared to the single cores and the Opterons, it's still a lower-high end CPU that is (for the most part, no 'Dual Core is overpriced crap' because I read it and I don't like it. I buy for the future. I want to upgrade in 2009. Not in October.) better than the most popular CPUs. I just felt the random urge to share this. Discuss, throw metaphorical rotten fruit at me, whatever floats your airplane.
LOL, I'm so jealous. I'm still on the other side of the glass. I'll be there soon though, as my wife can't monitor me all the time. Tax returns here in 2 weeks!!!
2009??? There's no way you'll still have a 3800 in 2009. If you're still posting on here with that same rig (as your main rig) in 3 years, I'll eat my sweaty socks!
Uh... well... some people are still using an Athlon XP from back in 2003?!?! So I don't see why a x2 3800 won't last 3 years. If anything the x2 3800 will probably last longer (in terms of usage rather than wear and tear) than the athlon xp did. I plan to upgrade somtime at the end of 2007, beginning of 2008, unless I get shedloads of money in between. You of course will upgrade in a couple months, we need the top end rig to admire now and then round here don't we
I was really hoping this would be a good story about someone who shorted something out by crossing tracks. I want my money back!
I find myself usually adding little bits and pieces (more RAM, bigger HDD etc) but completely upgrading it every 2-3 years or so. I went from an XP1800+ to the system in my sig a few months back and it was certainly a good feeling. It's also weird to think that at one point, this was one of the best systems on the forum - it shows you how fast technology moves when you consider that three new cards have been released since I bought it.
What is the vid card in yours hitman, and im here on an Athlon MP... oh hell heres the cpu-z screenie but that will change when i get this comp free!! (sometime here.....)
My friend still runs a xp 1700 and a gforce 4 and an 80 gig. It works fine for him since the only game he plays is wow. A other friend just upgraded form the same specs to his brothers old stuff. If your not obsessed with insane res games then you can get by on longer load times. My friend can play fear on his 2600 but only because he has a half decent vid card. Its mostly with how you use it.
Lol, I'm here on an amd xp 2200+ at 1.9 ghz, 1 gb of value ram 250gb hitachi and a cheapy psu.. Cant wait till I get my new upgrade (4400+x2, 2gb's xms.. ect. )
You wont find yourself in a metaphorical "Armani of PCs" situation in about six months. The game is going to change all over again with Socket AM2 (940), and trust me, things are going to be quite different. The FX chip, the king of CPUs, has lost its luster below FX-57; This FX-55 I have which will soon (Finally) be getting a motherboard almost feels underpowered, despite the fact I have never used said CPU, and the fact that they tend to hit 2.8 GHz no problem-this stepping also tends to not have a problem with 3.0 GHz. Trust me, technology advances at a rather relentless pace; what sounds good now wont sound so good in a few months. As for the high end stuff, six months down the line, you'll inevitably be thinking "I got that six months ago for $100-$300 more than its worth now!"
Up untill this christmas when we all chiped in and bought my brother new parts for a pc, he was still on the 1.4ghz T-Bird with 512mb sd ram and a Ati AIW 7500 that he had built back in his senior year of high school (hes in his 5th year of college now) looks like someones gonna have to eat his sweaty socks in 2009 On the same note, i plan to keep my 3000+ Venice past college, and im in my junior year of high school. It can be done
I just upgraded my processor after only having mine for about 6 months, and am thinking about doing some more upgrades when I have the money, just like to upgrade my system
I'm confident Altron will not have a X2 3800+ in 2009.. plus no one will remember this thread in 5 years time
I'm running a 1.4GHz Pentium, and 512 of RDRam, with a riva TNT2 video card right now. It's my wife's, I don't even have a computer. To make things worse, it's a dell, but I don't game. All I do is rip movies, and listen to music so it gets the job done. LOL, I just built a HTPC that runs the aforementioned over for less than $300. I'm about to upgrade though, begginning to think about waiting for the new socket.
i upgraded from a 2500 barton i'd had since about a month after bartons were released to an x2 4400 in the first few days they were available, that was an awesome week
depends what you play really if you like buying new games all the time then you have to upgrade but as I only play cs:s I don't feel the need to upgrade anymore untill the next installment of cs comes out I mean people are still playing 1.6 and starcraft on there athlon xps
I am well aware that it will eventually become a slow chip, then an old generation chip, then an outdated technology, then completely obselete. I was just commenting on the fact that as of now, I have a faster PC than most bit-techers, and it's a really strange experience browsing the hardware forum, because of the discussion of equipment worse than mine that is considered 'good'.
