Electronics Current Measurement plan

    Ok I've maide a few faints towards getting some current transducers before, but I think its time to take the plunge now. I discussed this before here, but now I think I'm in a position to proceed.

    I have two measurements to make:
    DC Pump supply 12-24VDC 17W output
    AC PSU 240VAC 420W output

    The two parts I've picked on are both from LEM:
    LTS 15-NP (Farnell code 3943501
    which is PCB mounted taking a 12V supply Ip= 3A giving 2.5V out
    LTS 15-NP (Farnell code 3114557 where you feed the wire to be measured through the device (5V supply) Ip= 15A giving 2.5V out - (there is alteratively 6A version at RS part 436-2330 )

    I vaugely thought the second for the PSU and the first for the pump but maybe I'm not quite with it yet.

    My A/D measurement is from a DS2450 which can measure either 0-2.56 or 0-5.12V so I probably could use the first without amplification, but the second might need some help.


    Any thougths, advice?

    i have used the ACS750 succesfully with applcations going up to 40 amp at 12v (can messure the output of a 480w psu). it works very well and outputs a simple voltage 0-5v. and its pretty cheap.

    what are you driving? a gauge or A/D converteR? this is a major factor in determining wether or not you need "amplfcation"

    Thanks, I'm going to be using thw Dallas DS2450 for A/D. Can be programatically set for either 2.56 or 5.12V

    hmm sounds cool... are you passing the info thrugh a serial port? or is it goin to do something much cooler that i havent thougt of?

    in any case, best of luck with whichever current sensor you choose.

    Well I've currently got a serial to 1-wire adaptor, though I may go to usb. You can then use a prpper API to read/control anything on the bus.

    The normal advantage commercially is the small size, but from my point of view it was to get away from poking at a COM port to something a bit more 21st Century!

    Nice project you have in progress.
    I was thinking of something related to your idea.
    As theshadow27 has pointed out (ACS750), Allegro also makes current sensors. Unfortunatelly, you can not order free samples in Spain (I asked for them in the Allegro web, and they told me they have passed my order to the Spanish company in charge of distribution. No answer to my mails. :sigh: ).

    I will keep an eye on your thread. It sounds really interesting. Best luck. :thumb:
