X-Acto Knife, beer and some bolt cutters (yes 2 foot bolt cutters)... It still has never seen a file or sand paper... Moral: Slap yourself, and never do that again...
Max current draw exceeded Smoked the NB header on my Mobo, I installed a multispeed antec fan, and made the mistake of changing the speed with the system on. Funny thing was there was no warning against this. Still waiting on RMA resolution.
Tbh, that really shouldn't happen. I twiddle my knobs with the system on and haven't heard or smelt anything go bang/pop.
Ok, a bit of progress, and a theory. I put a multi-meter on this fan and it looked fine. Then I sent it off for RMA. They looked at it and said the same thing. Did a few live tests, and have sent it back. So, the best I can figure is this: My system had overheated, and locked up. Instead of powering off, and waiting for the system to cool down. I just flipped the fan on high, and poof! Smoke! I am thinking this has more to do with the motherboard lockup/overheat than it did the fan. The mainboard is on RMA now.....
I must be missing something here.... MSI has a history of this kinda thing???? BTW, I had to pay $35 since this is the 3rd year of the warantee. I have almost spent enough for a new mainboard after the $10 in shipping to get it to them.
Still waiting for the board to show up. DHL has it somewhere at the local office, but it has not been delivered yet. Called them on the phone, and they have to "research" it to find out where it is. Hope they did not send it in the retail box, or that thing is gone.......
As with most PC products these days, no. Reliability for most stuff is excellent. Provided you stay within the specs (e.g. watching out for excess current draw through fan headers ).
Well, Called DHL again today. Aparently the Barcode got smudged somewhere along the line, and they lost the package. They have found it, and generated a new tracking label. I guess it's not quite as bad as I suspected.
The job up top was pretty good for the little amount of effort. Hope the new motherboard doesn't expirence the same problems.
Got the replacement MB, no scorch marks at the nb fan It still does not handle my Nvidia 6800 AGP card though. I'll give the support guys one last shot at this, then its going into my "spares" pile.
