Wow.. that anodized finish is nice. Love the alu and all the work you have put in to it. May I ask how much that anodization cost? I've been thinking of that for some of my work but have no clue about the costs involved. The exterior seems to come along nicely too.

Thanks Gnu, the anodising cost A$90 about US$58.

Tried a few treatments for the front today, and while I didn't get very far with
most of them, this one has some promise.

It's more conventional than some of the things I've been thinking about but is
quite pleasing to the eye with just a little curve to the louvers.

Now you have to imagine this made from alu and plex. The two thick side pieces will be
one piece each, though it's made from two pieces here.
While the bottom few louvers were to flip down to gain access to the switches and I/O,
it soon became apparent that access to the slot loader was blocked with this scheme.
So the obvious idea is to make a larger part of the front flip down. This is great because
with this way the side doesn't have to be opened to gain access to the drive and the side
panels, while still being hinged at the back, can be fixed at the front with a couple of screws
thereby getting rid of the latching mechanism that had to be made. :)

But as it stands it's too boring, so some thing will have to be done to make the front more
    interesting.

Oh, and yes, there will be mesh behind the louvers.

...I think it looks just fine. Stealthed and gorgeous. Granted, that's just one modder's opinion. ;)

I actually agree with E.E.L. It may look a bit simple and boring made from the mdf but one you make it out of the alu and plexi it will look fantastic. Did you try slanting the horizontal pieces down a little (/ this way)? It may give you the little bit extra you are looking for.

The front looks nice but simple.
Still not sure about the sides though.
    But that's your choice.

    Great work as always!

I definitely like the look, just add something the top and bottom of the grill and it will look good. Keep up the good work!

I've staring at the pics for some hours now. They really do look good and in another material would be cool but ...

This is just my opinion and not a suggestion.
One of the things that drew me to this mod was the mechanical look of the insides and especially the way you managed to make an asymmetrical case and pull it off well. The angles and the thought that went into placement were outstanding. Now I know it's premature but it seems that you are hiding all the asymmetry by going 'back' to a squared up normal tower look. The inside is not normal and the outside is becoming normal.

Does that make any sense, I have a cold and can't think to well?

    :wallbash:Of course:wallbash:
You're absolutely right! It's starting to look like a normal, purchased case.
Ignore all the models, no more models.Just making parts as I go, like I did
    with the chassis.
    Thanks for the slap. :thumb:

Really wasn't meant to be a slap but you built this alum masterpiece that looks like a shuttle launch tower (which is no bad thing) and then cover it up with the outside.

Might as well have bought a Lian-li and said 'Done'. Your skills are better than that.

I would have to agree after a few more looks at the inside, at least put some parts in it to see how it looks, because I know that without an external case it will look great because of the layer you added for cables, it will look slick. great stuff!

    Thanks popo and Momiji. :)

I've got an idea in my head for the fan grille and as we have seen sometimes my ideas
end up looking like crap in the real world. But I'm going to make it, in all the proper
materials, and if I don't like it I'll make another one. At least I'm working with alu again
    (I hate MDF :D).

This grille is big and heavy, in weight as well as visually.
So to start, three columns are made from 12mmx25mm bar, all cut to length with the
    hacksaw.

Then using various files, the ends are made smooth and square.

    Periodically checking for squareness.

Then the filed edges are de-burred with this little file.

Next some angles are cut into the bottom edges of the bars.

I use this to stop the blade from binding.

Then the cut ends have to be filed smooth and uniform.

And we are left with three identical columns.

Next a plate needs to be made to hold the columns, hold the mesh and allow a method
to fix the grille to the chassis. This is made from 2.5mm plate.

The hatched area needs to be removed.

    Cut out with the jigsaw.

    And filed the usual way.

And this will fit over the fans like so.

Some holes are drilled into the backing plate to take M4 screws.

    And then holes are drilled,

    and tapped into the columns.

And you can see the result tomorrow. :D
