You said parts would be anodized. Clear alum. or some color?

The frame has been anodized already, I dunno about these extra detail pieces, personally I would leave them plain alu.

Oh my word, I'm pretty speechless, the word Awesome just does not cut it with this case, serious perfectionism, someone said mod of the year, I thoroughly agree and would cheerfully vote for it, it is absolutely fantastic.
I don't think I ever read such a long quality worklog before this, every bit of it hand made, not super expensive machines doing it all for you, what is not to like about this project.
The above comments were before I got to the wood work part of the log, and now I'm thinking, it is sooooo classy looking, I know your not finished yet but this is a masterpiece, very well done. :jawdrop:

    Thanks guys. :thumb:

Yep, all the same colour. The next project will have some different coloured anodizing.

Only a handful of parts will be anodized. all that is visible on top and front will be
    polished.

    Thank you. :)

Did anyone else see this? ;) Next project?! Is there a way to pre-subscribe to a thread that hasn't been started yet?

Your work is inspiring oldnewby. Simple as that.

Haha thanks shomann and TG. :hehe:

Starting on the top first, I've known for quite a while what it will look like but this
has all been in my head so just to get an idea of what it could be like in the real world
I quickly hacked up three pieces of the segments that will cover the space between
the side panels. Filed them down and ran them through the rollers to put a little
curve in them. These will be discarded and the proper ones made.

And using some of my daughters kiddy clay I fitted the three segments in between the side panels. Now please take into consideration that this is a rough look at what
I'm thinking, and the height and angles are all wrong here, They will be much higher,
and less of an angle, also further back. But I can see the potential
from this and I think it will be good. Also I may change the shape of the segments,
but then again I may not. :hehe:

Now as you know that if the top is run right up to the back of the panels, they won't
open. So the top needs to be moved out of the way somehow to allow the panels to
open. This will be accomplished by a sliding, pivoting arrangement as just a pivot wont work because of the overlapping arrangement of the segments.
These pieces of "U" channel are a perfect fit.

The wood nose will be mounted to the front of the sliding gear and it works like this.

Of course there are a lot of details to be worked out, but you get the idea.
If you download the last three pics into a folder and then open them in win
picture viewer, you can get a little animation by quickly stepping from one pic to the
    next.

    Back soon.

I really like those grills/gills. Did you consider making just flat rectangle ones?

    Nice idea for a top!

However, the middle picture of the sliding\pivot mechanism doesn't make sense to me somehow. As far as I understand, the nose will overlap the top of the front. What I don't get is how that part will slide back? Will the nose be lifted to clear the edge of the inner case during the mechanisms slide movement?

Sorry for not getting it on the first time, but I'm very curious as to how the part will move once done.

TG the nose will be fixed to the lower u channel, which is also fixed and doesn't move.
The top rail will have the segments attached along with other things. A slot will be
made into the lower channel to control the rearwards movement of the top rail.
There are a lot more parts to make so if it appears vague, wait a while and all will
    be clear. ;)

Ah! :duh: of course. I understand now. Thanks for explaining.

This is what I love about true modders. You don't mind explaining your work in progress to the layman aspiring to maybe join your circles one day, even though you surely have a more productive use of your time.

    +Rep for that!

Geez Dude! You can do AND explain? I have to pick one or the other. This is just coming along great.
+rep for the slide fold idea.

Everytime you post I think by myself, this is it, it can't get any better. Let's hope he stops now before things start turning out for the worse. And everytime you prove my fears were ungrounded! Phew!

That's OK TG, I've included a small update that may explain things a bit better.

    Haha, thanks mate. :thumb:

    Thanks murtoz. :)

Glad you like it mate. :)

Thanks, while there is still a lot of work to do and a lot of parts to make, I'm almost
    ready to stop thinking.

    Thanks Stuey. :)

Here's a quick update to give you a better idea of how and where things fit.

A bracket needs to be made for the nose to attach to. This is made from a piece of
"T" bar. A couple of slots are cut so it can slot into the lower channel.

This is fixed via two 3mm screws and (you'll see why in a later post) two double threaded spacers.

    And it goes here.

And fits to the nose like this.

I still have to determine whether all the segments slide back or only some of them,
as there is not a lot of room under the nose. So this may mean that a lower fixing
point needs to be made here for a few of the segments.

    Back soon.
