Hi everyone Yesterday someone rang my dad and said they were from a computer security company, and conned him into paying £120 and installing some remote access software on the computer. He says they spent about an hour remote controlling it, before they asked for the passwords to the other user accounts, at which point my dad said he had to go and switched the computer off. When I found out I immediately unplugged the ethernet cable and turned the computer on. The computer is pretty old anyway, so I'm just going to back up our family photos and then ditch it for a newer one I have spare. However, what should I check/change that he might have done while he had control of the computer? I've changed: * The passwords to any email accounts saved on the computer * Our IP address (my ISP issued us with 8, so I've just switched to a different one) * Router password (though the logs say he didn't try to log in) * Any passwords saved in Firefox (though there were very few) Is there anything else he could have done? There's only one other computer on the network, which is my machine running Windows 7 Pro. All its shared folders are inaccessible unless you have my password, so I assume he couldn't have got anything over the network. Is there any kind of system log I can look at to see what he did? It's Windows XP Home edition. We've rung Barclays and asked them to block the card he paid with and they're going to try to get the money back too. Thanks for any help ch424
you've done the right thing with the passwords, other than that I would nuke it and reinstall. I just hope your dad can get his money back.
