What do you think about this movie? I believe it is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I just recently watched it. The ending was very, very unexpected. The effects in the movie were insanely realistic. An awsome film.

I don't know how long the movie is but the original was shown on telly over here split into about 8, 45 minute episodes I think. (It was shown several years ago)

Probably the best war drama I have seen, Band of Brothers which was shown here a couple of years ago is the only other thing I have seen in the same league.

Very well done in that it was not pro German, just about the horror of war.

This is an amazing film, it's a real shame we don't see more films like it.

For those of you who don't know, it's a WWII film set on a german U-boat in the north atlantic. Its a 2 and 3/4 hour epic and is definately worth watching without doubt. the only problem is, it has german speech with english subtitles!  :naughty: :) :hehe:

Actually, it's 309 minutes long (three hours and twenty-nine minutes.) The ending was one of the most unexpected I've ever seen in film.

It seemed to be about that, but i'll bow to superior knowledge. It was a very unexpected ending, i thought it was perhaps a little tacky for the story, but also fairly accurate historically.

Intersting size of hours you have, 309 min = 5h and 9 min...

The Directors Cut version of the film is 200 min, 3h 20 min :)
The theatrical version is about an hour shorter.

yep got the dvd (R2) infront of me, (dir cut) and its 200 mins with both english and german soundtracks in DD5.1.

Id agree with all of u boys, it is avery good film and cos its a submarine flick it makes it better.

rarer still is that its well known and from the german point of view. Only others i can think of are cross of iron and all quite on the western font. (not sure the eagle has landed counts).

    Long movie.

My boss recommended it to me but I have never sat and watched the whole. I might actually have to go rent it.

I set my PVR to record it but set shutdown pro to shutdown 15 mins before accidently so I missed it. :sigh: hopefully it will be on again soon, but 3 hrs is a long time to watch a movie but hey I've seen longer films.

well as pointed out earlier it was originally made for tv over 6 hrs. but the film cut is great over 3 so... :)

shows what u could do with $15 million in 1981. which i belive they spent mostly on making working replica submarines from the orignal specifications.

$15m probably isnt that much for a 6hr movie...

I managed to sit through the whole thing again when it was on the telly the other night. Reminded me what an amazing film it was. I'm gonna bang on about this some more, but for similar alternative views on the war check out Cross Of Iron.
