anyone know of the best method of recovering data from a drobo array?
the drobo in question lost hard drive 1 and the unit itself wont go into rebuild mode when a new hdd is slotted in. drobo support recommended the owner to buy a new drobo and tranfer existing hdd and the new hdd to the new unit which he has done the drobo unit just reboots a few times and shuts down.

I was going to say to buy an identical drobo and swap the drives from the first to the second.

If that's not working then they're probably screwed. I've heard of drobos just dying and essentially losing all the data. It's a good enough product for what it is, but it's not actual redundancy and it's not backup unless all of the data on the drobo is also somewhere else.

the guy was using it as storage for his photos that he was slowly scanning and saving as digital.
acording to drobo he would have been ok had he not powered down the unit. and just replaced the hdd it would have kicked into rebuild mode as it is first unit is stuck in a reboot loop 2nd one only works as normal if all the drives are new hadding 1 new hdd along with the old ones makes it go into reboot loop then shut down
