These clamps are high-quality machine clamps, so the faces are tempered steel (as GT said). The reason they do not damage the work piece is that they are perfectly parallel, and match up with the edges of the part very well. This way, even if you use a really high clamping force it will be distributed along a larger area, and will not cause dents or scratches. On the other hand, if you don't clean the clamps and some chips of metal are in between the piece and the clamp, then you are likely to damage stuff and see your piece slipping.
Either you have colossal hands, or the parts are smaller than i initially thought

Funny that you should mention it. When reading his old log, I always pictured the objects in his pictures a lot larger than they actually were, for some odd reason.
