Greetings, Im trying to narrow down my memory choice for my new machine. The mobo Ill be using is the Asus p6t deluxe V2. Am I correct in assuming that 3 (or 6) Dimms is the optimal solution? Im thinking about 1600 as the 2000 seems way overpriced for minimal benefits. Looking at the cheapest stores in melbourne, i dont have much of a choice. I guess Ill be getting 6gb (3 X 2gb) and have a list of kingston, corsair, patriot or g.skill. I know there are subtypes but at this stage I havent phoned the shops to get the finer detail. I guess with 6gb I also will have to bite the bullet and go Windows 7 64 bit. I do need a fair bit of ram as I run alot of virtual machines at times. Any advice appreciated... Cheers David
using an i7 1366 CPU use 3 DIMMs for triple channel. 1600Mhz RAM is fine - with an i7 920 it gives a nice round 4Ghz overclock. try and get 1.65v RAM. Any of the makes you listed are fine - i use OCZ personally and it runs without a problem.
Voltage is important? And I just noticed some numbers like 7-7-7-29 ...Do they matter? And even though the motherboard has a pretty small list of QVL memory does anyone take notice of that?
the max recommended memory voltage you can put through an i7 chip is 1.65v so ignore the 1.90v ones you may see. the numbers are the CAS latency, lower tends to be better but you wont notice the difference (were talking nano second differences between 7/8/9). the QVL list is more of a 'we are definately sure this RAM works' list - ie stuff they have tested themselves, but as long as the RAM conforms to standard (all the manufacturers you listed do) then it will work.
You don't have to overclock the CPU to get DDR3 1600. You can have 1600 with your stock 2.6 CPU clock on the Asus P6T.
Thanks all, I will be adding an i7 920 to the asus board. Im heading for the kingston hyperx 1600 6gb set which I hope will fit nicely. cheers david
