Well i just sleeved my psu, and removed a few un-need connectors( just cut wires in psu and made shure they didnt touch anything) well after i sleeved it and checked all my conectors a million times i put it back in my case and hooked everything up and turned it on... and nothing happens, then my mobo starts to beep slowly and i get nothing on my monitor. after a while of looking at all my connectors again to make shure they were ok, they were, i open the psu to check my cut wires, they were good, and i notice two caps with brown stuff leaking out of them, is the PSU dead because of these ??? i didnt short anything... i think. the PSU is just a cheap 350w that came with my case so it needs to be replaced, but do you think the psu is totaly dead ?? and if it is can you guys recomend a good replacement ?? the cheaper the better, i was thinking an antec .
Ahhh leaking Capacitors!!!!! *runs and hides underground* yeah, that pretty much means it died, although you might try to replace them after you let the psu sit unpluged for about 2 weeks to let the capacitors uncharge.
yes sounds dead, probobly from short if the capacitors are leaking. As for replacment my sister just got one of these: http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/psu/spec_ak_p400fg_bkv3.htm fully sleaved with easy grip connectors silent 400w, mirror finnish and can be purchased for under £40. make sure you get the ver.3 one with the 24 pin power connector as it comes with a converter for 20pin and will alow you to use it with future motherboards.
ok its dead, i still dont get how i did it... but ok. its sorta a mixed blessing but what is a good replacement ?? rig specs are in the sig. i dont wana spend more then $90. i still dont get what people got against x-connects
The brown stuff may just be electrician's goop unless of course it wasn't there before, but if it's a cheap psu then it's not worth trying to repair, just keep it for spares.
OK i realy need a new PSU, right now im using my "server" and its slow. i need to buy a replacement and need help deciding what one. i dont wana spend more then $90. my rig specs are in my sig.
yea, those are definitely capacitors, however w/ a little modifcation you could probably get that sucker going again, first off you need to determine if the psu is feeding any power through the powergood wire, green on the atx connector, use a voltmeter, if so, then you probably havent fried the primary logic on the psu, if you can solder it and replace the cap's then find your short, you may be home free
too much work for a cheap psu , i might do that later and use it for a test psu but i wana get somthing better because this one was over volting pretty good.
*funny story actually, when i was working on a customers computer, the psu went dead, and i just couldnt find the problem, turns out while mounted the psu board is upside down in the case, on further investigation i find that a capacitor had desoldered itself from the board, and melted / welded itself to the bottom of the psu case..., RIP one psu
Well i got a 400 watt X-connect and it looks and performs flawlessy it looks too good for word so i'll let this pic do the talking
