Is it possible for RAM to just die?
Up until recently (5 mins ago) I was running 320mb - 1 x 256, 1x 64. Both PC133. I noticed just now at POST that it was only detecting 256. I switched the 64 into a different RAM slot but no change.

    Any ideas?

It can just die yes :( but it shouldnt really.........never had a stick go myself, but i see the occasional one at work.

BTW Freddy the way you have your case open like that isnt ideal for your components, its by the monitor and if u ever turn it on or off you will feel the static......tbh not ideal to have the discharge every time u degauss it or turn it on or off, not when the motherboard and everything else is right next to it ;) not saying thats what killed it but I guess its possible........dont know much about how static discharge effects stuff tbh

tis a new one to me, but i heard of a pc company that lost a lot of ram stick until they realized it was the new carpet they had fitted would charge people up statically....:sigh:

we can do that in a tech block. You rub your feet on the floor and then touch people on the ear when they are using computers and it actually can hurt.

oh how funny that is to do to Peanut.... :p

Only shoddy ram dies, usually that cheapo Über ****e stuff u get from dodgy dan at the computer fairs. Guaranteed Life expectancy: 1 week

I gave RTT a 128mb stick of my Ram, in exchange for 2 x 64s mb, cos sometimes it would boot up with 256 mb RAM, and it would get detected and othertimes it wouldnt. I'd be left with just 128mb working, or weird amounts like 196mb, or 142mb getting detected. Anyhow when I swapped RTT it, the two 64s worked fine, and I have had no problems with them so far (touch wood). However the 128mb stick I gave RTT worked fine in his machine, and he never had any problems with it.
I should reckon its mobo based tbh. Still very strange tho. Could be different makes of RAM conflicting :S

It's always a good idea to have matched sticks of ram to avoid problems, although my ram isn't matched and it works fine. I think it depends on the motherboard.
