I saw an article about a new technique to cut in all sorts of material. Believe it or not but they used water to cut through 1-2 feet of metal, like it was butter! But of course the water was at high pressure. They even cut a camera in half with a very, very clean cut. The advantage with water then laser is that the water doesn't produce heat, which made the cut so clean with everything in the camera intact (except that they were in half )
They usually add an abrasive. Again, easily available to those willing to shell out the high 5 figure sum to get one.
They are developing a laser for mounting in the nose of the new JSF (joint strike fighter). AFAIK it is almost finished, they just need to finish the plane now!!! Power will not be a problem because of those big things called jet engines Rod

lol, probably more powerful than this one but you can buy the same at argos: Link Have seen and used them to clean pcb's and they are very good but they didnt come any where close to attomising water Sorry Rod edit: should have said that the pcb cleaners were much more powerful than that one from argos. The cost about £300 and you can get them from RS
I don't think they've been successful in dissapating all the extra heat energy yet. With low efficiency theres a lot of it.
