I saw the post and thought I'd chime in. The company I work for sells full color, translucent, and etched case decals that operate similarly to the product reviewed here.

Also, it is not an ink process and is not water soluble. Generally speaking the decals last 5-7 years with indoor/outdoor use.

Macroman, if you want some free decals to review for the site just visit our premade decal page and I can get some sent out to you.

Instead of the plastic sheet to protect the ink, you could use the type of clear coat that modelers use. I use water based paints for my model railroad that is basically ink. Everything is topped with clear coat, either high gloss, matt or flat finish. You can get it in a spray can or for your air brush.

where would you be able to get this stuff in the uk?

also, I'm not sure whether it'd work...i reckon that the ink on the printout would smudge/blot/smear as soon as anythink liquid comes into contact with it...could be wrong though

I'm gonna try laquer first and see what happens, might be ok if you're careful enough with it and don't put too much on at once...

Check in your local hobby shops, especially those that cater to railroaders. This stuff is water based itself, and will work with decal material used in injets. As a matter of fact, it can also be used to seal the deal after printing before you submerse it to apply the decal.

Std discalimer: I have only used this to seal weathering job on my models, I haven't gotten into custom decals yet. However, this is what I've been told first hand by a friend who does.

There seems to be some confusion here. maddoxdy - the decals in the article are not of the wet slide type as you seem to think they are. They are printed on to clear acetate which has a adhesive backing. Spraying modelling clear cote may work but I suggest experimenting on some scrap first. The ink adheres to the acetate by disolving into a layer of water soluble glue, so extreme care will be needed when airbrushing the sealer to prevent dissolving the glue and ruining the print.

Of course water slide decals could be used instead. ;)
