I thought I'd start a thread so that people can post screenies of their desktops. Here's my Arch linux install running (what I believe to be the latest snapshot of) Beryl. Note the 3D windows on the left, set off from the face of the transparent cube. Please let me know what you think. I'm still struggling to find a wallpaper that goes well with the background image
Even better, a linux specific thread: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=116016 That's pretty funky there shagbag, I've not tried Beryl yet, what kind of hardware are you running it on?

i think a simple would have answered the question But thanks that is quite cool but i see it requires quite heavy hardware.
Yes. OK. Wasn't sure how much you wanted AIGLX+Beryl does not need heavy hardware. It runs fine on my hardware but it also works well on my Pentium M with ATi Radeon Mobility 7500 (32MB of VRAM). The slight performance drop is hardly noticable - noticable mind you, but only just. The key thing is having direct rendering (DRI) working. The ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 is a DirectX7.0 GPU (4 year old technology). If your GPU is newer then enabling DRI should be a breeze - it's usually done for you by either the open source video drivers ('nv' or 'ati' or 'i801') or the closed source (proprietary) video drivers ('nvidia' or 'fglrx'). To check, run Code: glxinfo | grep 'rendering' and it will say either Yes or No. AIGLX ships natively with Xorg7.1. You only have to make (from my hazy memory) 2 modifications to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you're using an earlier version of X then you should look into using XGL rather than AIGLX - they give the same result If you don't know which version of X you're using, look in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and you'll see it right at the top. If you've got an ATi card, you have my condolences. You can't use AIGLX for now; you must use XGL. You should also know that if you use the open source drivers, transparency is still rendered on the CPU. So if you want transparent effects, things may be slow depending on the power of your CPU. If you don't use transparency then you'll get the full 3D acceleration experience Not all ATi cards are supported by fglrx (ATi's proprietary linux driver). You can check to see if yours is, on the ATi web site. If you've got an nVidia card things are a lot better (viz. you can use AIGLX for a start!)
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_AIGLX http://gentoo-wiki.com/Beryl i installed beryl in less than an hours yesterday and everything work fine on my 9100IGP with the open source radeon driver (the prop driver do not suport my card at all). Almost no lagg, littel longer than fluxbox, but not that muxh (10 sec more at boot). I have only one question, where can i set the maximise effect duration, it alyas stop after 1 seconde event if the animation is not over. I dont find this parameter.
You've probably found it by now, but if you haven't right click on the beryl icon and open beryl settings and play around with it until you find what you're looking for.
i dont find this setting, i think its a bug. The time of this animation is always different depending of the application (not the size). It can be a refrech problem.
Meh, Compiz-Quinnstorm was better with only a few effects which actually made a difference. I hate that bloody name as well...
You probably already know, but for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, Beryl IS Compiiz-Quinnstorm. Quinnstorm still leads the Beryl project but her repos are now solely Beryl, ie. she no longer maintains her repos for Compiz. Remember: 'Compiz-Quinnstorm' was just the Quinnstorm repositories of the Compiz window manager. Beryl is a different window manager but is based on the original Compiz (Beryl is a fork of Compiz). You can still download and install Compiz if you want to (check the SuSE forums for directions), but you'll find there are less effects available in Compiz than there are in Beryl.
Sorry, my post probably should've been more clear, I was referring to Beryl (Compiz-Quinnstorm) and the inclusion of amny pointless (And, IMO ugly) effects like burn. I still use Beryl, but tons of the effects are turned off as I find them pretty damn pointless.
np. Have you tried Enlightenment (www.get-e.org)? While it's not compatible with Beryl, it's very impressive from an eye-candy to resources ratio perspective and IMHO better than xfce+Beryl in this regard. If you're turning off most of Beryl's effects I'd recommend you give Enlightenment a try.
I tried E a while ago and I hated it, I think I'll stick with Gnome for now. When I say I turn off a lot of the effects I mean things like rain/water and stupid minimising effects. Things like window fades when creating/destroying windows I keep on. Also, I like Beryl because it's all done through the graphics card, unlike E which I imagine uses a similar system to other WMs.
