Now we all are aware of how susceptable (sp?) windows is to viruses...and soon i'm going to be rebuilding "Scorpion", and that means reinstalling everything. At the moment I use AVG on my laptop, but i was thinking, i'm going to portect scorpion to the best i can...

In short. What AV software would you all recommend? Or should I stick with AVG?

AVG is pretty good. I use Avast personally, but both are about the same IMO.
If you want really good protection, try NOD32. It's not missed a virus in a really really long time. Pretty much the best out there. Not free, though.

Honestly, an Anti-Virus program isn't nessesary, I've not used one in years.
As long as your clever about things (i.e. Don't go opening that attachement promising you a couple of extra inches, or be careful with crack sites) you'll be perfectly fine.

If you really want to waste your time though, NOD32 is a great little program.

I agree with these guys if im honest. I would say it's much more important to have a decent spyware blocker/detector/protector than an AV. However, if you want to make your computer a fortress then i would recommend:

    AV + Firewall: AVG
    Spyware: Spysweeper

You would be really unlucky if you got anything with those beasts.

I agree with Ramble here. It's not absolutely necessary. I have only ever had one virus in all the time I have had the internet. And that was only when my mum used my PC. As long as you are careful. A good anti-spyware is much more useful and needed.
However, I still have an AV program installed. It's better to have it and not need it tan need it and not have it.

Although not completely neccesary, I would say as you can get plenty of good free software that it's stupid not to get one. Better safe than sorry I say.

For anti-virus: AVG or Avast! are both good, used to run avast!, now I'm using AVG. The free version of Avast! seems to be much more customisable than AVG's free version.

Computer Shopper have just tested several AV, winning commercial was Kaspersky, closely followed by Steganos (=Kaspersky Lite).

Best freebie was AVG with Avast! way down the list.

    Full reports.

We use Kaspersky for our non-networked computers at work, plus it's what the Open University supplies to it's students and staff.
Easy to use and get's rid of stff that Vorton and McAfee don't even detect.
Though I use AVG on my machines at home.

NOD32 if you're serious. AVG if you're going with the "I won't pay but somethings better then nothing" approach. AVG really isn't very good, but it is better then nothing. NO32 is very good. So is Symantec's corp stuff, if you can get it.

I generally don't bother with it anymore. I used to, but I never got a single virus and the real-time monitoring sucked up resources; a quick scan with Housecall every month or so is now enough for me. IMO, a good firewall and up-to-date patching is much more important than anti-viral software.

Blimey, AVG it is, then. I've been running Avast for the past year or so and admittedly had a trojan get in a couple of weeks ago. It was one that had only plonked itself in registry startup but still, starting to have my doubts over Avast being that effective, really.
