Halo is a good LAN game, put it on the lowest settings and it will run well, even on an old 1Ghz celery!

Delta force 2/Land warrior. You can buy it for £5 in game and you only need 1 copy to run a lan game, it has a special "lan only" install.

Age of empires. Me and my mates always had fun playing "age of mythology" coorporativley against the computer set to "titan" difficulty level.

Mobile Forces. Its really noddy, and un-polished, but there is something inherently right about running people down in dune buggies. Runs on a low level Unreal Engine, so should produce something on a 500.

Neverwinter Nights, with some add-on modules. Me and a bud are nearing ch4, great fun.

Star Craft, Rainbow Six (Possibly Rouge Spear..), Ghost Recon (Definitly a great lan game, don't know if it will run though on a low spec machine.. it might though). Original Doom, Doom 2, Duke 3D, etc. are all good as well. Mech Warrior series.
