Since moving from KDE, where I used KATE for text editing (which is a truly awesome editor), I'm after a decent one for using under XFCE. I could install all the KDE libs and KATE, but I'd rather not go down that path.

I'm after an editor which will allow many documents open at once so I can just switch between them in a sidebar for instance (for web dev), so a GUI client is pretty much necessary. On the same line, syntax highlighting is a must

So hit me with your favourite ones :)

You know you can do all of that and lots more with vi(m), and it will likely be installed on every *nix box you use. But if you must use a GUI editor, I hear nedit is quite good, although I've not used it myself.

How do you display a sidebar?

I've not been able to let go of Kate since moving to XFCE either.

I use a text editor called j (ver 0.20.2). It has a sidebar for multiple files. It's designed for java but also highlights c syntax etc. Has keyboard shortcuts for compiling stuff too

vi can edit more than one file at once, then you can just use quick keyboard commands to switch between them. I know it's not exactly sidebars, but it will do the same thing, and would likely be quicker once you are used to it.

Or if you really are desperate for sidebars, if you use a (black|flux)box window manager, you can use tabs and have multiple instances of vi open in each one. Not sure about XFCE with tabs though.

I like it even enough I generally hate java programs because they use lots of memory and slowly consume even more over time because of memory leaks.

PS - The latest version is 0.21.0

It was released 1.5 yrs ago :worried:

apt-cache search j returned 4500 results, so I just got it from sourceforge.

Yeah, splits, that's the one. I'm no developer but it does the job for me as an admin. I expect the multiple instances of vi is the answer for development work.
