now i dont want you all to shout at me with acrtic silver stuff because frankly im so pi**ed of at this stuff its stupid, im sick to death with pulling my cpu out of the socket because this stuff is so damn thick its like a glue.

is there any softer alternatives out there? im not a huge overclocker and would like something thats a bit softer and maybe not metal based?

anyone got any ideas? whats the ceramic stuff like? is it still as thick?

Ceramic stuffs indentended for water cooling I believe, or something other then a normal job, but I believe its not that different in viscosity.

I'd just put less on personally, but if your not a huge overclocker I guess you could use a pad, or the generic white goop that comes with HS's.

ive used the generic stuff before and on these amd64 it seems some of it evaporates lol.
never noticed it on my socketA stuff in the past.
hmm, i only use a slim amount anyways, but it still seems to 'gel' itself to the bottom of the stock cooler, and because of the plastic retention thing on the mobo where the cooler clips onto, you can twist the cooler very much.

Yeah, sounds like a problem. Socket A's are fine for twisting off, so I havn't found any real issues. If you don't overclock and dont mind the extra few C then just buy pads, they should seperate more easily.

I dont think I've ever taken the CPU out directly for A64s - the heatsink does it for me! The thermal pad (I think that was what was on there) caused my s754 to come out with HSF. Thinking about putting some AS5 on my Venice as it still has the pad on it (came preassembled in a combo from Monarch).

But, yes, each time I end up yanking the CPU out via the HSF, I quickly check to see that all the pins arent still in the socket :) .

Rofl, that reminds me of the time I gave a friend a quick verbal runthrough of how to assemble his computer after he ordered all the parts and a few hours later I got a phone call, he sounded really worried, and he said that he had scratched off the pad on the HSF like I told him and had applied the paste to it, and when he went to make sure it covered all the way (by looking) he had pulled the CPU out. I thought the man was going to shazz himself. BUT I ran over and everything was fine. I was surprised that thermal paste held that well, I think he just grabbed some stuff from ratshack.

But yeah, I dunno - try the ratshack stuff, seemed to work fine on every machine i've seen with it, just be careful when yoinking on the hsf.

Just be more careful when you take off the hsf.... If you pull it off very slowly, it gives the AS time to break up and get rid of the "suction". Sometimes you just have to apply tension to the heatsink to get it to break up - nothing has to be physically moving, it will come apart with a bit of tension, not movement. If you try and physically move the heatsink then yeah its going to pull your cpu out...

I use arctic silver ceramique. Its very good stuff, best thermal compound iv used, but its pretty thick stuff.

yeah i've had the same issues with yanking cpus's out with the sink. BUT, i have had this happen with ceramique AND the generic white goop. Unless you're takin heat sinks off frequently i'd just keep using ac.
