with the new release of leopard i have been drawn to macs but i have had no experience of them what so ever in my life short of an ipod. so my question to all you MAC boys and girls out there is Mac Mini or mac book? I am a student so i dont have a vast wealth of funds available hence why those 2 to choose from can anyone give me any infomation on the 2 from personal experience please. peter
It depends. Do you have a display, keyboard and mouse? Are you more likely to use it at home, or do you need it to be portable? You can see where I'm going...
am at uni and yes i have all those things. and portability would prob be a good thing as i do travel a bit. can anyone tell me what the 2 bits of kit are like to use please?
Well I have a Mac Mini, but it's old PowerPC one. It's just like using any other Mac, but it's a pain to get into if you want to upgrade the ram or the HDD. The older Minis where a bit lacking in the USB & firewire port stakes, but that's easily solved with some hubs. I believe the newer Intel Minis have more USB ports. The Mini isn't very well endowed in the GFX department, so some of the whizzier bits of OSX might not be as per higher spec'd machines (UI animations and stuff) As for the Macbook, well I can't comment on it specifically, but I do have a Macbook Pro - and the differences in specs between my first edition Pro and the current Macbooks aren't great. In fact, it's safe to say they're probably better as they have Core 2 Duo, where as my Pro only has Core Duo. That being the case, my Pro is fast enough for me, has better GFX than the current minis and has the portability. I also believe that the new Macbooks have 802.11n WiFi, the Minis only have 54g I'm sure someone will be along in a moment that has one, who can give you some more info.
Absolutely. That's the threshold for total nerd: using your lappy while taking a crap. I highly recommend it, it's extremely novel. My mate has a macbook, and he swears it's the holy grail of computers. Take that as another vote.
Go for the MacBook. Is the Mac mini gonna be around much longer in it's current form? I dunno. They're quality machines but the MacBook's just had a refresh and they're great little machines too. I know it's sad, but I really would stump for the black model though. The white ones get so mucky.
just thought i have a c2d e6750 based desktop anyway so the mini would be pointless as i can just hook the macbook up after lectures and stuff. and i have been looking at both and if i was to get a mac book i would get either the black or the white version as the base one is useless to me as no dvd burner as far as i can tell.
Yeh, another vote for a macbook, there brilliant machines, i love mine But as K said earlier the white ones do get seriously dirty no matter how hard you try to keep them clean
You generally pay around a £70 premium for the pleasure of having a black MacBook, but with your university discount, you're probably saving enough to put it to the back of your mind. It sucks, but that's the way it is. Don't forget, APP when bought with a machine, only around 60 quid versus 200!
will prob wait till september then as then the student deals come out so i can get free stuff with it and also new spec list possibly and maybe price drops as will need office for it
A whole year? Well, there might even be new laptops by then. The student deal they do is generally the 'free' iPod (mail in rebate).
i know and as my ipod is no more i want one. and i just paid for my years accomodation so am broke beyone all belief so unless i can get a job i will wait till then lol
If you can afford a black one i would safe up just that little bit more for a MBP EDIT: just realized the blacks aren't as expensive as they used to be, so its quite alot more for a MBP
yep it is mate i may get one in march/april just depends on how much i get for my birthday as am owed a fair bit of money by the tax man from taxing em when i shouldnt have been to the sum of £360 also just rememberd what is the battery life like of the MB and the MBP as the lecture theaters i have dont have power easily available and as am in all day on wed and thurs will need a good batt life although should be able to charge at lunch also game front i am not too botherd about gaming as i have my gaming maching which does me fine will prob put wow on there and maybe a few other simple games but nothing big
I think it is utterly hilarious that Apple have the black vs white MacBook thing going. Sorry, I mean stupid.
