Hey, need some help I think.

I'm going back to Uni soon, so less work (less pay), I've just had a damage deposit back, and my Hansol CRT is starting to show its age.

So I'm thinking of making hay while the sun shines and purchasing a spangly new Dell 1907FP. Though my decision is only provisional; I've got a few questions, as tbh, I've been a bit of a CRT fanboi until recently

Firstly, have any first-hand users got their impressions? I'm not really out to get the fastest response times if it's going to comprimise on colour-quality, eg. black being black -- so I'm more interested in DVD/general use performance.

Size is another thing I'm concerned about, as I know a 19" has the same native resolution as a 17", so does it make a huge difference? I'm currently using a 17" CRT @ 1280x1024. I don't think the larger display will effect me too much, personally, as the monitor will be further back on the desk and it'll also be useful when watching films from across the room.

Is the best idea to buy the screen at £250 direct from Dell for the new monitor? Is anywhere else (UK) able to sell them for less? Bearing in mind I don't really want to go without a full warranty. Are there any discount codes I could use? :naughty:

I'm thinking they might reduce the price of the 1907FP quite soon, as the 1907FPV (with a blinding 1000:1 contrast ratio) has just been released.

Ok, this is a bit of a waffle now, any help is greatly appreciated! :hehe:

Just regarding the warranty - if you don't buy from dell the warranty (4yrs) starts from the time the retailer you buy it from bought it from Dell. Maybe you knew that already though - it isn't like you get 4 yrs from Dell and 1 year from $retailer :D

    Hi there,
unless your determind to buy Dell, i would recomend a Viewsonic, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/19_Inch_LCD_Monitors.html (Viewsonic VX922 19" LCD Monitor - Black/Silver (MO-046-VS)) Price: £184.99 (£217.36 Including VAT at 17.5%) This is a quick monitor, and its cheaper than the Dell, including a 3year warranty with Viewsonic "3 Years Manufacturer On-Site Warranty - Call Viewsonic on 0207 949 0307 for warranty on-site replacement service and D.O.A. (Email: service.eu@viewsoniceurope.com)"

We use the 1707FPs at school, and they are very nice monitors, even better than the 1705FPs we also have which are good.

I have seen the Viewsonic, and it does get good reviews as far as response time goes -- though the colour and black level of the screen apparently aren't up to scratch. As I'll be using it for web work, coursework and probably watching films more than anything -- I'm not really after a screen that's almost purely designed for gaming.

    Thanks for the input though!

    Ta! :D

Well, for the benefit of others, I did choose to purchase the monitor in the end. It came down a bit on the Dell website thanks to some site-wide discount.

I have to say, over-all I am extremely impressed not just by the monitor, but by the level of service by Dell. The second e-mail I got after ordering the panel mentioned that the expected delivery date would be the 2nd of October (!), however monday morning (I ordered late Saturday evening) I received a call from a girl in Holland, asking me if it would be acceptable for them to deliver my monitor on tuesday morning!

I wasn't around so I opted for Wednesday afternoon instead (today, you'll notice :p ) and here it is! I am currently typing on a brand spanking new, Dell 1907FP. Curiously they shipped the monitor in one box, the manual in another [relatively huge] box, and a UK power cable in a third box. Seemed a bit daft, but oh well! It's all here :D

    [mini-review]

As for the monitor itself, I am very impressed. It's very strange going from a CRT to a TFT, particularly with your own machine, but I'm definitely getting used to the higher brightness levels (that said, I have toned it down a bit already with the Nvidia control panel!). Colour quality is awesome and response times when playing Call of Duty 2 were .. Well, perfect as far as I can see. I can't see any ghosting at all!

The only thing I have noticed is the back light bleeds a little into the black at the top and slightly less at the bottom of the screen. It's only really noticable when watching DVDs, and definitely not a distracton, but I thought I should mention it. There isn't a single dead pixel at all either..

Over-all I'm impressed with the quality and performance, it's built extremely well! The only thing that bothers me a little is the viewing angle .. But again, it's not noticable unless you're looking for it!

    [/mini-review]

    Well recommended
