What a pile of crap! Seriously, this is the first and last time I buy a panel I've not actually seen with my own eyes. Utterly incapable of producing a black at any angle in excess of 30 degrees. It's not faulty, as the forums are full of similar complaints, but without suspecting the panel of having this problem prior to buying it, I'd never think of searching for it. I bought it based on some pretty respected review sites, and am shocked that they do not pick up on this. From now on, the only person I trust to test and review a monitor, is myself. Bear in mind that this video was shot in a fairly well lit room, so it's not the camera's auto exposure brightening the screen because it's compensating for a dark room. The room is lit by 2x 25W Daylight balanced CFL lamps, so it's quite bright - this really is as bad as it is. As you can see the panel exhibits massive shifts from dark to light when viewing angle is changed, and due to being so large, when I'm sat at my desk working on a dark image, no two areas of the panel are actually the same. With bright images, no problem... but a dark one? Forget it. My 2405 wipes the floor with it. Considering this cost me £1138, I think this is a terrible product. This is the first, and last time I buy a monitor without testing it myself. No review picked this up, despite reading loads. Only when I searched for the problem on forums did I realise that this is a well recognised shortcoming of this panel. If you have £1100 to spend on a panel... don't buy this one!!! Consider this consumer advice bought at my own considerable expense. Rubbish panel!
Send it back for a refund! Use the distance selling regs (assuming you bought it over the net) within 7 days to send it back no quibbles.
I'm just stunned that such a highly regarded panel is so crap! Some people's idea of awesome is clearly not the same as mine.
Nope... what you see is NOT a reflection... it's still present in a totally dark room. The screen glows off axis. If I can get my cash back, indeed. That's the only option left now.
Hm I've spent a week testing graphics cards on both the Dell (I think it's the 3008 but it might be the 3007) and the NEC models you talk about. I haven't really noticed any differences between them, except the NEC one is very chunky. If you want, I'll take a quick look tomorrow/today at the viewing angles and will try to tell you which one is better.
Really? I hate mine. Is yours the same as mine? If so, how can you love that? If you could that would be great. Load up a black screen and see if you have the same problems I do. Sitting at my desk with the monitor a normal distance away 2-3ft, I can see marked differences between the centre and the corners. Bright images are absolutely fine, but the darker the image, the worse it is. Test with a black screen.
The NEC one is chunky but full of win. Although when we reviewed it it was 2008, so hopefully they have an upgraded one by now. Are you sure yours is the same revision as people have reviewed?
Wow, that is bad. I can see why you're not happy, I certainly wouldn't be. Looks like my cheap TN panel!
I must say my 3008 is fine... I have a hanns-g 28" jobbie to bench with and that isnt even that bad! Have you tried the 27" dell? The IPS screen with 2560x1440 pixels?? That certainly doesnt suffer from this and in honesty is the only screen I would rather have than my 3008. If you can get it swapped for one then you wont be disapointed. Its the same Panel Apple use on thier 27" mac so going out to view the panel isnt too hard. Andy
It's a Rev A03, which I believe is the latest one. [edit] I just read this in another forum. The top corners of my panel are loose, and can be pushed back at least 4mm. When pushed back, the light leakage issue disappears in those corners. I've laid a steel rule across the panel, and it's not flat. It's like the above post says, there is uneven pressure causing this light leakage/glow. It's not an inherent problem with the panel used, it's how it's installed in this chassis - it's a build quality issue. I'm just astonished still that this utter piece of rubbish has got the reviews it has. There's a real need for monitor reviews that are created by people who know what they're talking about. If I wasn't so busy I'd damned well do it myself. I really want a 30" panel or I would... I think.. I'm reluctant to buy another Dell product after this. I can't even begin to describe my disappointment in this monitor.
I think you have just identified a manufacturing fault with the monitor. Surely this would be grounds for a refund?
I think legislation covers that under "being fit for the purpose it was intended for". Calling is a problem at the minute because i've disconnected and packed away my land line phone cos I'm decorating... hopefully Scan will respond in this thread shortly.
The apple 27" is glossy it would be a bad choice. Like my laptop screen, it would be reflecting everywhere all the time. Apple also put cheap white LEDs in their 27" not RGB LED and not samsung's LED Blu, so basically their cheap white LEDs have a lower color spectrum than the wide spectrum CCFLs found in professional monitors.
I would see to getting a replacement, as I just think you have got a bad screen from a bad batch. I'am on my second one now which is a A02. I'm only on my second one due to 1 dead pixel happening. So I took full advantage of Dells zero dead pixel warranty and got a replacement. When you do get hold of a good one, you will come to realise how good of a screen it is. Cheers, Simon.
I have to say I'm surprised as well, it's pretty shocking to see such uniformity problems with an S-IPS panel, they should be the absolute dog's danglies for accuracy across angles. That's what they were originally designed for after all.
