Why do all notebooks make one mistake with the specs.....on every laptop there is one component that drags the system down as a whole

This laptop is intended as a mobile gaming notebook, yet the screen it comes with is simply too big in terms of resoloution...1920x1200.

That screen area maybe great for applications and browsing but even for the 7800go, its going to have trouble running games at that high a native resolution and when you turn on AA & AF, its gonna struggle even more...and turning down the res is simply going to give a poor interpolated result

The ideal widescreen res for that laptop is 1400x900, the 7800go could run every current and future game for at least the next 12mths at native res with copious amounts of AA & AF.

Even a desktop 7800 SLI system struggles to run Battlefield 2 at 1280x1024 with max settings and 4xAA and 8-16xAF at more than a constant 50-60fps, so imagine how the 7800go is going to struggle at 1920x1200.........

Well, the eversham laptop review shows a nice 50fps on average, this is more than enough to give a smooth game performance. Besides you can change the resolution yourself.

The answer for you then Hustler is: don't buy this Dell. The Evesham is 1440x900, and is £300 cheaper, though it only has 1GB of RAM, and various other specs are also different.

Personally, I would love that resolution for all the Windows work I do, and while you are correct to suggest that BF2 might struggle at that resolution, consider that playing a game that high might mean that AA is something you can live without (or may indeed be not at all necessary).

Also, what I call PixelStretchTM ie the upscaling of lower-than-native-resolution images is a lot better than it used to be. It's impossible to say at this point, but I have a feeling that 1280 probably wouldn't look too bad on this screen.

Hands up if you'd like to see a bit-tech review of this notebook to find out?

The point i was making is simply that in the near future games like Quake 4, UT2007, FEAR etc are simply going to be too demanding too run at native res...

Seems a bit silly that you spend £1800 on something that your not going to be able to make full use of, although i suppose in desktop mode you could connect it to an external monitor......

Anyway, other than the screen its a storming laptop and i would dearly like to see a review with benchmarks, if for no other reason than for you to prove me wrong.. :D

Are Pentium M's really all that great?? I use a 1.5GHz Pentium M in my work laptop and it doesn't take much to slow it to a crawl. I'm not sold on the Pentium M's at all but it's understandable why they are used so widely in laptops.

Ive got a 2nd gen M 1.6 and it matches my 3Ghz P4 if not bettering it in some cases. With the X700 mobile chip its actually pretty good for gaming, it runs CoD and BF fine for my liking altho im not an FPS whore so slightly lower detail graphics are ok by me :)

Addmitedly, this and the Evesham are powerful laptops, but its only got a 2GHz cpu. From a gaming point of view, if I were building myself a new gaming system now, I wouldn't get a 7800GTX and a 2GHz cpu to go with it.

If there is a point to these gaming laptops, please point me in its direction coz I appear to be missing it :hehe:

The simplest answer is the Pentium M punches above its weight. Check out the reviews, by comments like Pentium M 2Ghz = P4 Desktop 3Ghz are fairly common.

Look at the AMD range - raw clockspeed doesn't mean what it used to.

Noise benifits? These computers are usually louder (at least a lot higher pitched) than a desktop, espeically when running at load.

I would like to see a full review of this monster.

Yes, higher pitched is true, because of the small fans, but at idle, or general non-gaming windows type work, they're mostly silent... that's what I really meant

I've been eyeing the Gen2 laptops since I first heard about them last spring. The plan is to purchase one next summer sometime after saving for a bit and use it as a gaming system/MCPC. I'll be able to hook it up to my HDTV for my gaming needs (use a coffee table) or just run it as a MCPC.

Battery life on these guys is assumably horrible (to answer the question up above). I think when running a game your looking at under 2 hours of runtime (thats using the 6800go. probably worse with the new GPU). But, when you have a system like this.. your obviously not going to be lookign to use it on a park bench. Its more raw power in a compact frame with increased portability.. basically think of it not as a laptop but a very compact desktop with the ability to function as a laptop if really needed. You'll still want to be close to an outlet 98% of the time.

Definitely hands up on seeing bit-tech give this baby a review! It seems to be an awesome laptop well worth the time and investment.. but more than anything its going to be (if not already) a very popular product and I think it would benefit many to have your unique and thorough insight upon the product.

I was seriously considering a Shuttle or something similar for my next PC; huge ATX cases are getting on my nerves. If them thar gaming laptops are all they're cracked up to be then I'll have to seriously re-evaluate my plans. :D

-But- That notebook only has the 6800 Ultra..Not the new 7800 GTX gfx card. I would still go with the sager and upgrade teh card once it is released. But since its in such high demand, the 9800 is already out of stock at pctorque.

Performance aside, i dont think anyone (not even voodoo pc) can compete with the beauty and features that a sager notebook can have (Speakers + sub, tv-tuner, webcam built into screen, beautifull LCD's, great paintjobs).

The only problem i see with the new XPS is that it is freaking BUTT ugly and has that normal cheap plastic look to it that most dell notebooks have.
