I have an Inspiron 9300 which is basically the same, personally I love the super higher res. Whilst I can't play all my games in it I find that using 1440x900 in DoD:S with all settings on high and no AA leaves me with a fabulous experience, the tiny bit of fuzziness from upsampling effectively works as AA after all.

I think this machine is great, noise wise on idle its quieter than any desktop (pretty much silent), gaming wise I can't ever hear it over the sounds/music. Even better it gets me ~3 hours battery life when websurfing. I don't game away from a plug but you'd probably get half that or less but thats more than enough for me. This has completely replaced my shuttle, after all its sooo much easier to take around and more oomph than my old desktop.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that it has a subwoofer built in

I'm sure the Sager can be bought from new with the 7800 in it, since it's just a slot in MXM module.

As for battery life, the screen is pretty much the #1 drain for any notebook. However, I would be *very* interested to see some tests, since the desktop 7800 chip runs cooler than the desktop 6800. Obviously that's not the same as comparing the two in Go form, but *maybe* the Go 7800 GTX pulls off a similar faster-yet-less-power trick...

The only disappointing thing for me right now is the lack of what I would consider a true gaming laptop:

    AMD Turion ML-37
    GeForce 7800 GTX Go
    2gb pc400 ram
    60gb 7200rpm HDD
    120gb HDD
    8x DVD DL Writer
    17" LCD

As for the 7800 gtx go being faster-yet-less-power, in the beginning of Evesham review Nvidia says the desktop version was designed around the mobile, so one could assume the same power-to-speed ratio could apply to the Go.

I'm the proud owner of a Sager, and love the thing to death, but this dell looks pretty decent.....

You might want to look at Fujitsu Siemens, they released a GF 6800 U laptop that uses the Pentium M and could take 2 hard drives so you could get the disk configuration you like. You'll have to wait a little before they release a GF7800 version but I think they used MXM so it might not be that long a wait.

I'm not convinced that in laptops there's a great difference between topend Intel and AMD CPUs, anyone got any numbers on it with comparable notebooks?

    hey guys.
How heavy are these things? i need a laptop for college but my pc is also getting old for games so i want to kill two birds with one stone. in college il be close to outlets nearly all the time so battery life is not really my problem. would it break my back carrying it around campus?

I've got a nice backpack for it that doesn't make it so heavy to carry around. Personally I wouldn't lug this notebook around my Uni all day unless I was staying in the same place all that time, I wouldn't do that with a 15.4" widescreen either (my brother in law has a fairly light one but its still damned bulky).

How much are you likely to ever use your laptop at lectures anyway? Personally I only ever take my laptop to the library at Uni which is just fine, I wouldn't take it round lecture halls though.

I have a Jansport Airift, fabulous bag, real comfy and perfect for 17" laptops and their power supplies, with space for a mouse and spare PCMCIA cards. I can even fit my slimline scanner with the laptop all in that compartment!

Downside is that it costs £85 EX. VAT. I got mine at Gatwick airport in a panic after my bag strap snapped on the way to boarding the plane, so I went to the nearest bag shop and grabbed the best bag for laptops and paid the price...

Comes with a 30 year warrenty though, and Jansport are super strong.

There are lots of nice bags at that price, for £30 you can get the Targus which is what sold me :)
