Checking several sites, I note that they mention that PC2-5300 memory with EEC is required. Servers like the Dell T300 use a very specific memory type. This server I gather will only use Registered RAM.

I checked the manual and it mentions that PC2-4200 & 5300 533/667 Mhz can be used.

Is there any reason why PC2-6400 800Mhz RAM of the above registered ECC type cannot be used in this system, as long as all of the memory when upgraded is of this speed?

    Thanks

    Simon :)

I've found that with most RAM, even if it's rated at a faster speed it'll simply run at the fastest speed the motherboard can support. So even if you got PC2-6400 it'd only run at 5300 speed. I'm not sure if it works like this for ECC memory though.

Possibly use a memory configurator, like this one at Orca Logic http://orcalogic.co.uk/asp/default.asp

    Hope this helps

Thanks for that and the link yes you are right about the speed issues. :thumb:

I was asking the question as I have been offered some at a very reasonable cost and wondered if it would work, though it would be underclocked so to speak operating at the fastest the motherboard can support.

Could you test it maybe before you buy it?

Never had an issue with memory running "too fast" only too slow, if its PC6400, it can step down to whatever and usually means if it runs at 800Mhz 5-5-5 you can get 4-4-4 at 667Mhz :D
www.crucial.com has an excelent memory configurator, and usually their prices are good but recently seem high, but thats the same with all memory these days I guess

Yes I have done this with normal non EEC Ram, but is this the case with server ECC Ram?

I can only assuming they have JEDEC timings onboard so know to step down but can't say if thats the case or not, EEC memory is about the only memory I haven't played with sorry!
