    Hey,
My sister just got a new laptop, a dell XPS L501x to be exact, and all was fine until a few hours into use, where the left and right speakers stopped working and the sound now comes from the subwoofer only. I have had a look at this problem for her and have not been able to figure out what is wrong.

The left and right volume sliders both affect the subwoofer whilst any other sliders do nothing(except master volume), and the speaker setup is in stereo as default, though i have tried putting it into 5.1 to see if this helps get the speakers to work, but it had no effect. I have also tried rebooting, and resetting the audio to default settings, none of which had any effect on the speakers. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or could suggest ways to fix it, for all I know it could have just been a button accidentally pressed which did it, though I haven't noticed any buttons which could do this.

    Info:
    Windows 7 64 bit
    Dell XPS L501x
the speakers are, from what I can gather, in a 2.1 setup.

    Thanks
    Henry

Try a headset to rule out it being a software issue?

Thanks for the help, given it a go and it works fine with headphones.

We rang up dell and apparantly they are having some trouble with the model or something, and will call us back on soon, so hopefully they can help, my guess is that the laptop will need to be replaced :(

It's probably a loose wire then ;) Would probably be an easy fix but I'd send it back as well as opening it up would probably void your warrenty. Don't think you'll need to replace the entire laptop though.

Glad it's going to get resolved. I have the same laptop but no such issues at all.

Apparantly they're going to send a technician around sometime soon to have a loo kat it, so hopefully if it is a loose wire (most likely) then it will be solved by him. Thanks for the input, it's always nice to know that someone else has the same model with no problems, rep to you :)

    same issue

    Hi Henry,
I have exactly the same problem with the same model as you described.
Can you please tell me if it is a hardware or software issue and how did they fix it pls.
Your reply will be extremely valuable for me as I am living in Finland and I cannot send it back to US for the fix. :(
Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.
    BR,Lam
