DUBLIN, Ireland - A nursing home in Ireland has hit on a cheering way to keep up the spirits of its elderly patients -- by providing its own pub.

St Mary’s Hospital in County Monaghan, near the Irish border with Northern Ireland, believes ready access to a good pint may help its patients -- average age 85 -- actually live longer.

“We would say the whole social aspect of life does extend the years -- it means the patients aren’t bored to death,” Rose Mooney, assistant director of nursing told Reuters.

The pub, which opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. and charges normal bar prices, had also led to an increase in the number of visitors, she said.

Personaly I feel I cannot respond to this without feeling racist and stereotyping... But the story is about the Irish... ;)

More drinking goodness. Well, actually no, thats all of it, but you get the idea.

My school got their own pub now, shame I've already left :waah: A beer a day is supposed to be good for concentration, we should be having a pint before exams :hehe:

State-dependent learning! You'd have to have a beer before you recall what you have learned. Drinking at work? 'tis so I can recall my training more effectively, sir! :D

Pretty much the best thing to between the onset of senility and the onset of being lowered 6 feet under I reckon.

Our principal did once give our year (12) several crates of Fosters for an end of year celebration, just after year 13 left. Then again just before I left year 13, a fabulous night, outdoor swimming pool, filled with warm water and foam, beer in one hand, burger in another, watching an outdoor movie projected onto a wall with the girls :)

Damn, I went to school in the wrong country. :p

Seriously, though...as someone said above, best thing between senility and sod. If you don't remember anything anyways, it won't hurt to get drunk enough to not remember! :)

sigh, we had a total bitch as head of 6th form, for the end of year party/prom/thingy she let people have 1 glass of champagne with dinner and that was it
when i heard this i decided that £25 for a probably crappy dinner and 1 glass of champagne in bloody mitcham was a bit steep, so me and my mates just went to the pub
£25 gets you a lot more there :p

    Drunk before noon!
I personally think this is a pretty good idea. No reason the elderly can't get a bit of smashed for fun as well as the rest of us.
