What's the sudden fascination with destroying a hard drive? You're all taking useful computer parts and destroying them for no reason other than to make a video, post it here, and talk about how cool you are with other people who destroy hard drives.

It's a fairly dumb thing to do. There are plenty of ways to have fun with fire without destroying computer parts *cough*siblings*cough* :p

This almost sounds like it will end up being a spam pit...

I herby designate this thread to Loquis. I guess he will be having a party before he gets home eh?

<note to moderators> I do not mean to turn this thread into a spamtrap or anything like that, only to show my concern and hopefully encourage people not to start spamming. only to of course start siblings on fire...</not to moderators>

Actually, it's kinda weird... I remember when I first registered here (August 2002), the "Disaster Mods" section was just that... Mods that had gone wrong - as well as the usual "Ouch I just electrocuted myself" and "Oops, I modded my thumb"

Now, it seems to have been over-run with sensationalists who can't resist blowing things up or setting them on fire, just for the fun of it.

Not sure I'm a fan of the new breed of modders... still, each to his own.

By the way, before I start another argument here, I'd like to point out that I don't actually have a problem with these guys (and gals?) - I just wouldn't choose this form of mod for myself.

Actually, once the weather warms up a bit, me and a friend are gonna put tp in a p100 and either just light it up, or start it up and light it up, and see how long it lasts. Should be pretty funny. I will try and borrow a video camera and tape it if I can.

Doesn't anyone have anything better to do with old hardware than burn it?

I suppose with hardware prices today, and the huge difference in performance between modern stuff and the old stuff you guys are destroying, there's not actually anything better to do with it.

Still, you could at least try to make it look like an accident, rather than deliberate pyromania... or better yet, try out some of the mods that look like they might work, but no-one wants to risk - I'm mostly thinking of the "Will my PC work if filled with non-conductive mineral oil?" one...

 Why not make a mp3 pc all you have to do is get a crap old pc and put a nice big hard drive in why waste it ? It does not need the latest pIII or atlon 5million just get a scrap pc Im sure you could use a mp3 pc either put it on a network or have it stand alone. Ok maybe burning it is funny but think of the fun you can have with a nice mp3 or storage pc?

There is actually a guy I know that takes old computers, even old 486s. But the thing is, the pc we will be burning is not stable enough to run windows. IT has already been gutted for parts, caps of the psu, power cord, fan, processor, and the ram, and even the hdd put into another machine. so essentially we will only be burning the crumy mobo, and case... not even the floppy or cd-rom are still there.

If you want it, I think my friend may be able to settle with you if you want to pay shiping. otherwise we really want to burn it. How often do we get a computer that is worthwhile to burn?

I totally agree with you that an old p100 or even older (a 386 could still run floppy linux and be turned into a nat router) are still useful. ;)

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Why even destroy a PII 200? It can play MP3s etc.! Or you could use it as a router, there are many possibilites. However, when it gets to 386 and 486 CPUs - there really isn't any use for them anymore. But wanting to destoy a 80GB HDD like the guy from the other thread is absolutley crazy IMO :duh:. I never really intentionally destoyed any hardware since I almost always find uses for it.

Once you go below 100MHz the PC is really useless.

P2s and P3s are some of the best deals on the internet. I got a 350MHz P2 with motherboard for $10! For my purposes it works great!

Actually to tell you the truth. A 486 sx 33 will be fine as a router. Ping times will have about 10ms added onto them. and thats at 10mbit/s. 100mbit/s to the internet gateway/router thing is just stupid, and un-needed. I had a 486 that I was using as a router before. But the psu has died, and I decided to destroy it and use some expensive wireless routers from work. I should have just replaced the psu, since I can only get 80k/s out of them.
