I would have taken some and made them into clocks or coaster or something cool no just smashed them (I would have shot them )
Shooting them - now there's an idea! Something would go wrong I'm sure - either damaging myself or ending up in prison - thats a given!!
It could be possible to turn a hard drive into a 'clay pigeon' shooter. Trim the plates and give them a grippy edge, then rig the read/write head as the loader. Make the obvious holes for the projectiles, and you have a highly deadly shooter! The platters would spin up to near 7200RPM, then the head would drop a ball or something into 'the Zone'. The edge of the platters would grip the projectile and fire it! THAT I would love to see! High explosive packed into the HD?
120 * 3.1416 * 19.140625 = 7 215.8625 cm/s on the outside edge of the platter spins per second*pie*(1.75"*2.5) inch to cm ^squared 7 215.8625 cm/s on the outside edge of the platter 70m/s a second wouldn't be fast enough for any real fun
^^ what exactly are you calculating there? the actual speed of the platter or the velocity that something would leave the platter at? regardless, how is 260ish Kph (160ish MPH) not fast enough?
Agreed, I just need to find a torx screw driver to get at mine. It's a bit more effort for a graphics card coaster, besides I think theres coasters already out made from recycled PCBs
Actually... can you just use magnets to completely ruin the discs? Either that, or leave them soaking in something like vinegar or coke for a week.
Did I mention that the vinegar container is strapped up to a 50lb bomb which in turn is wired up to an elaborate Pee Wee's style breakfast machine trigger composed entirely of dominoes?
I new there must be more too it. Surely there's a countdown timer involved in that scenario somewhere?
An LCD countdown time with a loose battery so you have to keep reseating it otherwise the display fades and glitches. I think I'm starting to describe my own personal hell... -_-
Sir, you get many, many man points for eating pork crackles. Ah, yes. A time when a 100MB disk was seen as amazing and unnecessary - everyone else at the time used to carry a small box of floppies around!
I know a sysadmin who used to work in a medical research place. He disposed of sensitive drives by putting them in an MRI machine. He had a special box made up for them so stuff didn't damage the machine. It would essentially shatter the platters and completely wipe any concept of data.
We put out probably 20-30u's of these a month for precisely that purpose - also use them as backup voip services
