Damn you! I was trying so hard not to get excited by the hype and my memories of the original but after reading the previews I just can't help it. *tries to brace himself for disappointment*
I'm hyped after seeing the gameplay trailers. Doesn't look dumbed down much at all. Separate exp and aug trees, a good number of augmentations, a full inventory system with ammo types. There seems to be some really good ideas for augs too. I'd rather they hadn't included a cover system, but hopefully you'll be able to turn it off. The big question remaining is the feel of the game and story line. Could go either way, but from what I've seen I'm hopeful. EDIT: My bad it looks like augs and exp have been combined, however at least in a way which is no where near as dumbed down as DX2
I've been reading the previews and can't wait. This and Shogun 2 have got me really excited. Damn you, lack of money. I never played the second, but the first was awesome (in fact I was playing it today ). Hopefully the plot will be classic Deus Ex, and it seems to be shaping up that way.
Yes, I have pre-ordered. I have never played any of the previous games at all so I have absolutely no pre-conceptions as to what to expect!
I've pre-ordered as well. I'm only hoping it will last as long as the original game. Sequels these days are seeming to last less in gameplay time.
New game play video up. Looks pretty good i'm not so sure about the glowing ladders and crates and such but it does look like they've kept the multiple paths to the same objective. Sadly level size seems way smaller. probably the only way it'll fit onto a consoles limited memory.
Yay air ducts Looks like thats an early game "tutorial" level so hopefully later ones are larger and the different option are a bit less clear cut.
I can't say that I'm a fan of items and paths being highlighted in this way. It's console-based hand-holding and it'd better not be in the PC version. What's the point of stealth or exploring if those approaches just amount to "look for the glow-y thing"?
The promotional material reeks of trying too hard to mimic the features bulletpointed in reviews of Deus Ex; all the while acting like they're wholly original concepts. Yes, the fact that we could approach most situations in Deus Ex in multiple ways was a great part of the game; but there was more to it than that and the various approaches often weren't as blindingly obvious as the stuff we've been shown so far in HR. It may seem harsh of me to criticise them for promoting the game on the merits of it copying the things we loved about the original; but I just worry that they've missed the point somewhat. I hope they prove me wrong on that one. Also; the melee takedowns are going to get old fast, I think; just as they did in AvP. Once I've seen them all I'm just going to be bored by them and frustrated if I'm being shot at while Jensen acts like a badass outside of my direct control. 3rd-person cover is bearable, but I hope the 3rd-person ladder-climbing and so on is optional. Regardless, HR is looking pretty good for a 2011 game ; and I can see myself enjoying it overall; but I think I'll spend a lot of time telling myself "Stop comparing it to the original. Stop comparing it to the original. Just enjoy the game." Agreed. I don't see how this 'feature' fits the game at all and it's already received a huge amount of negative criticism online. I hope they remove it in the final version, or even just remove it when playing on the hardest difficulty; like how Crysis removes grenade indicators on Delta mode. A gentler 'frob' effect as was used in the Thief games or a subtle HUD element to indicate an interact-able item like in the original Deus Ex would be fine, I think. EDIT: This, however, is dissapointing: http://www.tweetdeck.com/twitter/DavidAnfossi/~1Jjy3 Translation seen at: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=117122
On the whole I'm still excited about this and I think I'll enjoy the game. However, as some of you have already pointed out, there are few things that concern me. I really hope you can turn off all the silly glowing objects and that the demo level previewed is just a taster of things to come. All the paths seemed pretty obvious to me, so hopefully later on the levels will get a lot more complicated.
Meh dumbed down and consolised. How predictable. 1) Big flashy glowing "I'm an idiot and can't see things" highlights on everything of importance. 2) Oh so conveniently placed ammo. 3) Gigantic UI. 4) Lame dialogue with gruff tough guy cliche and prickish secondary character. Woo that hasn't be done 90 times before. 5) Enemies that shout, "**** where is he?!" to warn the dumb player, rather than just attacking quietly. 6) Oh so conveniently placed big red explosive barrels all over the place. 7) EZ mode cover. 8) z0mG OrSum 1 clIck WoLverine spikez blood splatter takedownz 9) constantly regenerating health!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A Deus Ex sequel or Splinter Cell..
The biggest issues for me with that clip were numbers 1) and 6) I'll reserve judgement till a review comes out
Came here to post the video... not needed! Really not liking the 'consoleness' of that trailer, I really hope the PC version isn't a port, if it has the object highlights and those yucky third person sequences I think I'll cry.
I thought the video was actually pretty good. The third-person perspective parts reminded me of Splinter Cell quite a bit. As for the glowing objects - well the original had the same thing (albeit only when you got really close and it wasn't so pronounced, but still...) I don't mind that so much although it does smell a bit of console. I was quite disappointed when she simply had to use the circuit breaker to turn off the electricity - what happened to nano tools and lock picks? If you can simply just go up onto the roof and get in that way, what's the point in shooting enemies and wasting ammo and health? My biggest gripe with the video was the condecending way in which she explained things, like she was trying to explain it to a distant senile relative. "Now, we're just gonna move the body, just for fun." Speaking of which, the moving of the bodies seems more like you have a ragdoll magnet rather than physically dragging the body. I still have hopes for this game, but I'm hoping that the next demo video will be a bit more impressive.
The lame patronising voice goes hand in hand with dumbing down and consolising of everything. I sometimes wonder if the games industry thinks the only players are 12 and that's it. I hate the simplification of everything. Is there even an inventory any more? There's the constant auto health regen, and probably loads of other stuff too, and it just makes it like a different game. It's not really Deus Ex any more, it's just another sneaky/shooty game with some token hacking. If they are going to make an action packed blood n gutz n orsum badaz silent takedownz game, I wish they would just do it with a new franchise. It's horrible when they defile old franchises, and it's even sicker because they obviously do it just to use and abuse the former good name of the game, and to cash in on the old players to who played the original and might try the new one. Already had a Dragon Age 2 and Test Drive Unlimited 2 this year, hope this isn't another one.
This game has amazing trailers but the more gameplay videos I see of this the more disappointed I feel, I kills me to say this but it does look really consoley. I don't have issues with consoles (I own a 360 as well as a PC) and a good console game is always fun but there are just some things that don't transfer well between the platforms and that horrible gold highlight on the objectives (the ladder) in the recent gameplay video was just horrible to see. I wonder if they will do a pre-release demo for this game?
