Hello, I want to set up a home network. The idea is to have a server acting as a proxy server for internet access and also as a DHCP server to which all the other PCs will connect.
I don't want to be spending hundreds of £££s on Windows Server software for a network of just a handful of PCs at the most so I guess I will need to use Linux, of which I have only limited experience of installing/configuring.
I haven't managed to find any really good guides out there - does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Have a search on the forum this gets ask fairly often these days:

But i'm in a giving mood (alright i admit it i'm bored) :D. ipcop, smoothwall, Clarkconnect and monowall all do these things most run on a dedicated machine which should not be used for any thing else for security reasons. They're basically are firewall distros but provide much of the needed additional functionality.
